crunkGP96
As you all know i picked up a 95 GTP a little over a week ago. The car had a little bog that was mentioned before the sale. It only happened on a warm start after running the car to normal temp. I drove the car all the way back home. About a 3hr dr. Car drove like a dream. I then started it again after getting home 30 min later. Car started and I got that bog again butt his time it shut off on me. Car kept wanting to start but would just not fire up. Left it sitting for about 4 hrs and it started right back up. I took it to my mechanic and he says he can't pinpoint exactly what the problem is yet. He mentioned the problem might be the ignition module? He showed it to me and it goes right by the manifold where there is some spark plugs toward the front end of the motor. Any idea what the problem might be? I figured someone on here might of had the same problem. Something is definitely acting funny when it gets hot. Coolant temps are normal and car is throwing no codes Edited November 20, 2012 by crunkGP96
19Cutlass94
Sounds like heatsoak somewhere around the coil/ICM area.
crunkGP96
Sounds like heatsoak somewhere around the coil/ICM area. So what do you suggest I replace? Oh and the manifold gasket was replaced shortly before i purchased it
z34dumas
i had the same problem with mine.... i ended up having to replace the coil pack and control module.
crunkGP96
i had the same problem with mine.... i ended up having to replace the coil pack and control module. Thanks, going to see what my mechanic says tomorrow. I remember on my old 96 with the 3100 I had to replace the coil pack once. I cant remember if this was the same problem though
crunkGP96
UPDATE: Replaced the entire coil pack with one from a reputable salvage yard. Actually was off an 03 Malibu. Drove the car and the bog seemed to go away. Drove it about an hour and a half parked it. Let it sit for about 30 min. Car starts, RPMs aren't steady, Put the car in reverse and it shuts off. Started it up again but the engine bogs and then shuts off again. I guess the coil pack wasn't the issue. No check engine light and throwing no codes. What do I replace next? Fuel Pump maybe? Got a great deal on the coil pack so I'm not upset but I don't want to throw away a lot of money on the car either. 19Cutlass94
Well if you got the coil pack, did you bother to get the ICM as well? The coil packs dont suffer from heatsoak as bad as the ICM does.
crunkGP96
That goes attached to the coil pack correct? I believe when I asked at the salvage yard they said it was included with the coil pack. I'm pretty sure my mechanic said it was too? 19Cutlass94
If you dont remember plugging it in, I doubt they gave it to you. Most places when asked about a coil pack will only give you the 3 coils. You need to tell them the ICM too. Id find out exactly what they gave you. crunkGP96
ICM was included with the salvage yard coil pack and was all replaced. That starting issue went away! However, like mentioned in my previous post about it bogging out I come to find out the previous owner had a shitty upper intake gasket job done. I took the engine cover off and I come to find that one of the bolts holding down the intake is missing. Check the other bolts and they are loose and 3 of them are stripped! So now my mechanic is going to have to re thread the holes and replace the upper intake gasket again. It was causing a vacuum leak and that's why the car would bog out. The first issue on not starting after getting heat soaked was fixed by the replacement of the ICU and coil pack. The previous owner said he had the gaskets replaced by his mechanic but man, what a shitty mechanic! I also found that he destroyed the cruise control cable and damaged the accelerator cable as well. Going to replace those two cables as well now but I cannot find the cruise control one as it has been discontinued. I did find the accelerator one at the dealer as well as the upper intake manifold gasket. All in all, I was expecting to drop some coin on this car when picking it up. So far, I've only spent $80 for the replacement of the coil pack with labor. Oh and BTW, also found out my car came equipped with a DIC and one of the previous owners decided to take it off and sell it. I installed one yesterday i bought on ebay with the temp sensor. They did a shitty job at cutting the temp sensor wires in case you wanted to add it again:mad:
Galaxie500XL
Seems to be a common problem. I found several bad bolts and threads from a previous "repair" on my LQ1, when I did my gaskets--both the intake manifold bolts, and the plenum bolts were fairly well buggered up...most likely due to overtorquing them. Best I recall, torque on those bolts is only supposed to be around 15-20 INCH pounds.

I don't know absolutely everything about cars but I cant believe some of the things some "mechanics" get away with that people never notice. Galaxie500XL
In my case, I had it apart because of a coolant leak from the LIMG. I invested in a Heli-Coil kit, and re-threaded several holes, and had no further problems. Really? Did you have the block re-threaded for the bolts? Would you car bog every now and then?
