sawyej1
The trans went out on my sons 1995 Cutlass Supreme 3.1L & 4T60E. Will a 1996 Cutlass Supreme 3.1L engine & trans be a drop in swap? I am pretty sure there was change from OBDI to OBDII from 95 to 96. Will I need to swap the ECU from the 1996 engine as well? Thanks in advance for any addtional advice! White93z34
just transfer the wiring harness over when you have it out, may have to change a few other things, Transmission range switch comes to mind off the top of my head, wanna say knock sensors will get swapped over as well. I THINK the transmission is all the same.
19Cutlass94
So your putting the 1996 stuff in the 1995? Its basically a direct swap. Use all your 1995 sensors, computer, harness etc etc. Thats going to make it the easiest. However one issue would be the coolant temp sensor. as I believe 1995 was in the rear head, and 1996 was a 3wire sensor in the thermostat housing. Use the 3-wire sensor, its more accurate. Just splice in the single green wire ( on the 1995 ) to the wire on the 3wire on the 1996.

White93z34
IIRC that single wire sender is just for the gauge, nothing else. the other one is for the computer.
Crazy K
IIRC that single wire sender is just for the gauge, nothing else. the other one is for the computer. correct. the actual difference in the transmission is an internal ring gear, but has no effect on anything unless you were changing differentials... you would have to use all wiring and sensors from the 95, the upper intake is different due to a change in EGR, but that, the EGR, and the pipe stack for the EGR can be switched. knock sensor is different as is the aforementioned temp sensor. everything should be plug and play for the most part. Breakdown
Since we did this will 'lil Amy and since I don't know much since Nunzi and Al did most (99.9%) of the work. OBDII has a rear O2 sensor and OBD1.5 (on the '95 does not), you will be throwing a code and your check engine light will be stuck on as the car will continue to look for the rear sensor that never came on your car, this will not however affect performance. pshojo
Well, I'm in process of putting 96 harness/ect in my 95, There is work to do at the C100 connector and you will need the OBDII Connector, however if you just swap the engine and trans I would agree that it seems it would be somewhat a decent swap. art webb
actually if you use the 95 computer it won't be looking for the 2nd O2 sensor. if you put a 95 motor in a 96 computer it would
