Slicks whats your oppinion?

well i was thinking about trying slicks to improve my qt mile time. Every time i have went i have had completely different launch numbers ranging from a 2.32-2.8 60foot. even with the 2.3 there was stil a fair amount of spin off launch. How much time do you think would be shaved off with this investment? the best qt mile time show below had a 2.378 60ft.

Another thought. Would getting the Tires 1 inch shorter then the ones i have now hurt performance or help?

Theory: shorter tires means slow top speed in each gear BUT it gets threw the gear faster using more motor powerband be foot. down the track instead of just shifting in to third and driving for mabybe at best 2 seconds at ~4k, i could be in third for 5seconds up to 5k picking up speed rapidly.

I know there is alot of flaws in this but its an idea. It kinda makes an Auto trany a Close gear Auto Trany. Everyone knows Close gear ratio = faster acceleration due to keeping the rpm in the powerband.

Any and All imput would be GREAT! thanks guys

In response to the q's about tire height improving accel you can absolutely positively, be gaurenteed, that it MIGHT help, maybe. Here are a few ways to look at it:

1) Yes, a shorter tire will change final drive somewhat, most differences noticed w/ a diff. that is more than 1" If you can obtain such a diff.

2) The shorter your tire is the less sidewall you have eliminating the "wrinkle" effect. A narrow sidewall is a stiffer sidewall. (That's the reason that FWD drag rims and slicks are mostly 13" rims and tires. It lets you have a big sidewall to accept some torque (no, not toque you damn Canadians)

3) You are already having traction issues, more acceleration is only going to magnify the effect.

4) I can nearly assure you that you aren't going to find a slick that is low profile. A drag radial perhaps, but not a true soft compound drag slick. The M/T FWD drag radial is a 26-10-15. That's about the same size as a 225/65/15 (Not low profile) and that's the smallest that Jegs.com lists.

So it depends on what you want, traction, or acceleration. But don't forget about all those high dollar, low profile tires on the market, I'm sure one or more of them could give you what you want. HTH.

*DISCLAIMER* Most of the knowledge in this post is derived from RWD vehicles, if such physics and drivetrain attributes don't apply then tell me I am an idiot, and whack me w/ a stick.

225/65/16 is the current tires.

i posted this b/c i have no real clue what would happen, and slicks would help better with tracktion solving the launch problem possible*.

does anyone have slicks with a 3.4?

Well we run 26X10.5X16 Mickey Thompson ET Streets on the GTP and it pulls consistant 1.7 & 1.8 60's at the track. It also has a Limited Slip Differential, and a bit more power to help it do so, but the slicks definately help A LOT. If you are considering them, don't hesitate to get them, because they will help more than you could imagine, you just have to make sure you don't have a problem with doing burnouts before every run, because without one the tires won't stick at all.

I have 245/45/17s. My best 60ft was 2.09, my worst was a 2.20. And most were in the mid 2.1's. I had 25psi in my front tires and 35psi in the rear tires. I had wheel spin off the line each run, even on the 2.09 60ft.

Yes I powerbraked to about 1800rpms. I was very impressed on my 60ft times.

I see you have ran a 15.5 with basically just a chip and CAI, you should invest in a FFP UD Pulley. I cant believe what a difference it makes.

Anyway, I'm heading to a better track Friday Nov. 14th. So I should be able to drop some tenths. I'll take the spare out, lower the tire pressure and see if I can't figure out how to powerbrake. Plus I just installed my UD Pulley.

It's not the lowend that sucks, it's the gear ratio's. My car feels like its struggling to gain speed at the bottom of 2nd gear. 1st gear is good if 2nd was shorter it would all be fine.

you guys are running faster 60' times than i am, in your FUCKING AUTOS!!!!

Yes we are. You obviously need a little practice launching if you can't pull a 2.3 60'. In the run in my sig for the TGP I pulled a 2.060 60', and I pulled consistant 2.10X's other than that. And the tires never made a sound, didn't even squeek, and they are some crappy offbrand tires with really hard rubber. If the car had more power I think I could've pulled 1.9's without any trouble. All it takes is a little practice and you should be able to pull 2.1's no problem...unless your car doesn't have that much power.
