daveppeters
I have a '96 Lumina with rear drum brakes. I have been wanting to swap them to disc but after researching, I have a couple of questions. I found Bob & Rob's thread which looks like it has most of the info I need, however, they were swapping gen 1.5 discs for gen 2 discs. I went to the junkyard today and pulled all the parts from a 2001 Monte Carlo - that is gen 2, correct? What potential issues will I run into? Do I need a special tool to compress/screw in the caliper piston or can I just use a clamp? I would like to keep the parking brakes if possible. Any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance!!
White93z34
http://www.w-body.com/showthread.php/46209-Bob-and-Rob-s-Gen-2-Aluminum-Rear-Knuckle-and-Brake-Upgrade-How-To-with-Pics this should answer most of what you need to know, yours will differ somewhat since you have drum brakes to start with, but should be the same idea. as for the park brake I dont know what to tell you on that. you might be able to make your existing cables work with the gen2 in-hat park brake, you may have to figure out something that will work on your own... be sure to take pictures and share progress. jman093
The parking rear brake cables are different, but could maybe be fabbed up to work on a gen 1. I was going to try and get them to work on my gen 3 GP swap, but ended up selling the car before I got around to that part.
iLuminaTi97
Technically speaking the 1996 Lumina is 2nd gen and a 2001 Monte Carlo is 6th but in respect to each other the 96 Lumina is the 1.5 gen w-body while the 01 Monte Carlo is a 2nd gen w-body. In terms of the drum to disc conversion this doesn't matter, you should've pulled a new set of knuckles and calipers from the junkyard. A c clamp will be fine to compress the piston. As for the parking brake i highly recommend that you shy away from the integral parking brake the was on the 1.5 gen Monte Carlos, what i did is pulled a set of aluminum knuckles off an 02 Grand Prix and uses the shoe in hat parking brake design. You will how ever have to get new parking brake cable to match that.
Crazy K
For our purposes, an 01 monte is a SECOND GEN W body. being a SIXTH GEN refers to other platform uses consisting of older rear wheel drive cars. You have some good parts to start with.
