cubsfan24
My 96 Lumina got the dreaded P0401 code the other day. I cleared the code and it didn't come back on but decided to clean the EGR passage way between the the valve and intake. While I had the throttle body off I decided to change the thermostat. I replaced the throttle body gasket too. I put it all back together and now I have what sounds like some kind of vacuum leak from around the EGR valve. I replaced the EGR valve with used one from the JY, and replaced both egr gaskets. The only performance issue this is causing is the 1st and 2nd shift are fast/firm. Its not like slamming into gear its just a faster than needed shift. I have looked all over for any loose vacuum hoses and found my pcv hose was leaking a bit so I replaced that but I can't find anything else. Here is a video I recorded showing the noise. It seems to be loudest around the egr. http://youtu.be/OTw2K6wcnMs Any Ideas?
95 vert
Possibly pulled the opposite side of the PCV line loose? (goes to purge solenoid behind coil pack)
cubsfan24
Yesterday I checked all the vacuum lines I could find and pushed on them to make sure they were tight. I already replaced the PCV line so I knew those were all good. Today I disconnected every vacuum line I could see and reconnected it. I also noticed my tranny dipstick wasn't all the way on. I pushed it back in and started the car and the problem seems to be gone. Shifts like normal now. I pulled the dipstick back out and cant get it to do it so idk if it was the dipstick or one of the vacuum lines even though none of the vacuum lines I reset were around where the noise appeared to be the loudest. Is it even possible for the tranny dipstick to cause a issue like this?
rich_e777
sounds like the EGR, had this issue once with a brand new gasket and it leaked every way i tried it. So i just Hi-Temp RTV`d the shit out of it and havent had a problem since. Have you checked the connection underneath the EGR that leads to your exhaust?
