WhatTheFehl
Well, Nunzi was over today after work and we began tearing down the new engine for the GTP. Pulled the valve covers, and he noticed that the rear bank was all full of rust. Started cleaning that out, and Nunzi convinced me we should pull the heads. So we did, and this is what we found... On the rear bank: Some water. That was kinda unsettling, but figured no biggie. We cleaned out the cylinders, then figured that would be the worst of it, we decided to pull the front bank as well: It looked like something that was pulled of the Titanic! The question is, anyone think this is salvageable? Or am I out $600 for this pile of shit with nothing to show for it? We cleaned it up as best we could, but there is still some scoring and pitting on the cylinder wall.

White93z34
more I think about it more it might make sense to get it to a machine shop, have them clean it up and use a slightly oversize piston for it need be. too much money at risk to run it as is. WhatTheFehl
I'm calling NAPA tomorrow to see when they can take a look at it. I'm really upset though.
White93z34
I would be (an am) too. however I think what you have can be saved, and considering its an otherwise good engine I think it can be saved.
tornado_735
What about a cylinder hone? I like Nunzis idea too. Bore that sucker out!!
White93z34
we talked about that. However, personally speaking. It is likely in Mikes best interest to get it checked over, and haev a cleanup hone done to it, and fitted with a correct size ring for it if need be. Once its all said and done there will be a good bit of money tied up in this 3800 I'd really, really hate to see it coming out just as soon as it goes in. That gets expensive really fast. RobertISaar
either bore it far enough to clean it all up without getting the cylinder walls too thin or should it not clean up by that point, sleeve it. this is assuming the bottom end isn't all screwed up as well, and with that kind of crap up top, i'd take a very close look at what is hiding below. Talk about adding insult to injury. I already have a 3800 with a knocking bottom end.

WhatTheFehl
Well with any luck guy who sold it to you will make good on it. Not holding out a lot of hope. I CCd you on that email, I'm sure you saw it.
GOT2B GM
Sorry to see this Mike. I think in all reality if you can get a 50% refund from the guy you are doing good. Sort of a "buyer beware" vs "not sold as advertised" deal. Get $300 back from the seller, keep the engine for any parts you may need. Acquire $450 L36. Scrap remainder of both L67 bottom ends ($100 profit) You'd still be out ~$50, but you'd have a good engine.
19Cutlass94
Sorry to hear about your troubles. But if it makes you feel better, I was told the 284 I have now shifts fine in every gear. Turns out every gear must not include 2nd gear.
AL
Mike, If the 77k mile l36 is still around Saturday morning, give me a call/text before
Addicted to eaton
That's not bad take it to a machine shop. Slap new bearings in it have the crank turned and new rings and you will be looking at an almost new motor
Schurkey
Does the crankshaft turn??? Is this engine seized? If it's seized, you're pulling it apart or dumping it. Even if it's NOT seized, that cylinder will never seal properly, it's likely to burn oil. The ring grooves will be packed full of crap you cannot get out. White93z34
engine is not seized. turns very easy actually.
rich17
I'd got to the guys house and demand my money back or take it out on his knees. And I wouldnt touch this motor unless it was going into a beater. But another motor. People never seem to get rebuilt motors to hold. I've seen it time and time again where a rebuilt motor lasts for shit. Buy another used 3800. If you dont plan on a huge amount of power, a L26 should be had for cheap
WhatTheFehl
Headers, mild cam, upgraded springs, colder plugs, and eventually a smaller pulley are what I want.
Euro
Yeah I'd bring that shit back to whoever conned you out of $600 for that paper weight What was the claimed mileage? Did he say it was drop in ready?

Did he say it was drop in ready? 89,000 miles. Said he pulled it out of his wife's Regal GS. Had a small engine fire... found that, it was a leaking valve cover gasket, not a big deal.
