Redrunner
So it slipped timing while driving at 3000rpm (accelerating up a hill) I didn't hear a bang....then again I was blaring heavy metal.... but any who how screwed am I? I know these engine are interference but also heard crazy stories about how at idle the engine was toast then at 7000rpm it was fine. Pretty sure those were with the 95 ones tho. Also, on the chance my engine was screwed I was looking into a replacement engine. My car is the 97 monte z34, and the donnor car i looked at was a 99 regal gs w/ 125xxx on the engine and 25xxx on the rebuilt 4t65E. Now since my car has that tranny. if i swap the engine and trans, would i have to mod my axle? Also how would the pcm work? What else would be able to swap? Vegeta
it is interference if the valves are open. When the belt breaks, the valves all default to a closed position, so its entirely possible that your valves are not bent and you simply need a new belt/idlers/tensioner. You can drop a 96-97 3.4 DOHC in, or you can swap to a different engine and trans if you want, but it will require the computer and possibly some wiring (still OBD2 but different computer for 01)
Redrunner
the belt didn't break, the T-belt tensioner did. Does the same function still apply?
Schurkey
When the belt breaks, the valves all default to a closed position, Oh, I'd just LOVE to hear what mechanism accomplishes this trick. (No how, no way, do the valves "default" to the closed position when the belt breaks.)
Psych0matt
My belt (one of my idler pulleys sheared off) at 70+mph, 2600ish rpm, no issues. FWIW
chriswhewell
PsychOmatt, just curious - how many miles on the vehicle when your belt snapped ? I changed mine today on my '93 Cutlass Supreme, has 70k on it. There was a lot of rubber dust & a few loose fibers in the interior of the covers, so I got to it in time.... Redrunner
my engine had 120xxx and the belt never snapped, my tensioner broke causing the belt to get alot of slack with its brand new belt then boom destroyed the heads and engine is toast.
