Strange noise from LQ1

that's lifter tick?

i thought it would be more subtle if it were that.

I don't know if it's lifter tick. There's a bulletin for top-end noise; I thought I'd pass along that info.

When my '92 Euro 3.4 began knocking, I hauled it down to the local Stealership. They brought out that service bulletin, told me that warranty wouldn't cover it; I could expect 7 hours labor plus the parts kit...but "not" fixing it wouldn't shorten the life of the engine. They claimed it would do no harm, but was an annoyance only.

Today, this engine--and the one-model-year newer vehicle I bought as a parts-car (but have put ~40K+ miles on) both knock so loud you'd think a rod wanted out. I swear they knock so bad they're triggering the knock sensor, which is why they're down on power and fuel economy. At idle, you can hear the knock from ten or twenty feet away.

I performed the oiling modification to the '93 while I had it apart for the head gasket. So far as I can tell, it didn't make a bit of difference.

I'm reasonably certain that the REAL problem is piston slap, not lifter tick.

Thanks for the info not sure if its lifter tick or not but doesn't really do it at idle or rev just in a certain rpm range when its spinning down, also its not as loud as it sounds on the vid in person. Ill make a more detail vid and what not when i have some free time. thanks guys.

Pull the inspection cover, and check the timing belt...sounds an awful lot to me that the belt is "walking" back and forth...it'll be obvious if it is, the edge of the timing belt will show rub damage. In fact, just leave the cover off, start the car, and rev the engine. See if the noise becomes more noticeable with the cover off.

However, don't forget to put the cover back on before driving anywhere.. :)
