GTP091 Posted December 2, 2020 Author Report Posted December 2, 2020 Need to figure out parts plan for this engine build now that I’m back into it. The haggerty guys seem to like Fel-Pro a lot. The other brand im wondering on is engine tech. They have a complete rebuild kit on rock auto that is interesting. Would like to be sure I get the better of the two. Anyone who’s done an engine rebuild have any preference? Also need some ideas on pistons/rings/journal bearings etc. Can’t order yet as I need to see what kind of machining is needed first just want an idea. Quote
carkhz316 Posted November 12, 2021 Report Posted November 12, 2021 How is this project coming along? I've been binging anything 284-related to try and learn more as I head into the back stretch of my LS4 swap. Quote

Food for thought: the 284 is rated for 250ft.lbs of torque, the LS4 is a 320 ft.lbs torque engine, I personally would choose the F40 trans to go behind the LS4. It's a certified 300 ft.lbs trans, the idea of exploding an already *hard-to-find-parts* piece doesn't really appeal to me. Quote

He shouldn't have any issues behind his cammed LS4. carkhz316 1 Quote

While the ratings are underwhelming, the 284 has been proven to handle a magnitude of power beyond what it was advertised and intended to. Believe me, the whole "unobtanium" aspect of this transmission is frustrating, but it doesn't matter since they break in stock applications too. Yes, throwing more power at it isn't going to help things, but I've accepted that this was a one-way street when I swapped transmissions originally. Additionally, I have two more (3 total) to work with, so I'll be alright for awhile. Edited November 13, 2021 by carkhz316 Quote

One is needing a ‘rebuild’ lol or exploratory surgery to see how they come apart and never go back together again. I haven’t quite got the engine rebuilt yet that is going to go together with the good 284 I have. The rebuild should be finished up by spring. Need to source out a good cradle yet. pwmin and carkhz316 2 Quote

So much useful searchable info here, so much better than facebook @GTP091 how is your swap going? @White93z34 @55trucker do you guys know if the getrag 282 transmission mount (part Pioneer 622620 ) will work on the 284? On my car which is a factory 284 car, there is also this circle black plastic thing on the bottom that looks like a mini hockey puck… thats all cracked up and needs repair/replacement. The transmission case has a rubber vent looking thing on top (almost like a shark fin but which air flows through) - does a 282 have that also? Mine is all ruined - not sure what it does or if its needed. I will post pics when I get back home. I have many more questions on the “manual swap” because in order to convert my Satanic / Powermaster brake system to normal brakes, I basically have to undergo the same work with regards to the firewall plate - and that seems to be the hardest and least documented part of the job. I will have one powermaster brakes/manual firewall plate, and another vaccum brakes/automatic firewall plate to work with. Quote

It’s slightly different but has been done in the past. post a pic of the 284 rubber piece. I’ll have a look at my 282 for comparison. Quote

So I bought the 282 mount and I can see absolutely no way to make it work on the 284. The 284 mount has bolts that go through it and mount into the side of the transmission, with studs down and into the cradle. The 282 mount has studs up into the bottom of the transmission, and studs down into the cradle... Quote

Viewing rockauto the olds cutlass manual mount shows an auto mount under the manual trans option. I found the right ones under a 89 Grand Prix. Screenshot below. SuperBuick 1 Quote
