mreverest72
Thinking of buying this car for my daughter to get by on but the guy tells me he has replaced the oil pump and the oil pressure sensor and it still loses oil pressure after it runs for ten minutes or so, then it dies. Anybody got any ideas? Is this worth me paying $200 for? I am a pretty fair mechanic but I have not run into this issue as I am not a gm guy normally. By the way it does have a rebuild title because the front end was wrecked.
Night Fury
I'd pay $200 for it! But I'm not sure how to fix the issue.... used engnies are cheap enough though. Curious.... How many miles does it have? My 2.8 has 256,000 miles and doesn't have an issue with oil pressure for the most part.
RobertISaar
for $200, you could make a profit scrapping it, let alone parting it out or just fixing/driving it. it shouldn't stall due to lack of oil pressure unless the only way the fuel pump is being powered is via the oil pressure switch, which means the fuel pump relay is bad at the very least. Hippie
If it's not rotted out underneath it's worth $200 even if it didn't run and good used 3.1's are CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP so I wouldn't even bother with the 2.8. Looks like it needs some serious TLC though, that hood's makin' me sea sick but hoods are easy to replace. Had a gray '88 Coupe like it, nice car but hated the digital dash, I'm a product of the Musclecar era, I gotta have needles to watch. it shouldn't stall due to lack of oil pressure unless the only way the fuel pump is being powered is via the oil pressure switch, which means the fuel pump relay is bad at the very least. Good point, I believe the fuel pump is wired through the pressure switch so that would make sense. Edited July 23, 2012 by Hippie

I forgot to look at the mile but the interior is in pretty good shape. I don't want to do an engine swap if I can help it.
Hippie
If it has a new sending unit and it's still showing a pressure drop it probably actually is losing oil pressure when it warms up. You could probably keep it running longer than the 10 minutes by bypassing the switch but I wouldn't want to bet for how long. See if the seller will let you hook up a mechanical gauge in tandem with the factory gauge, that will tell the tale.
GP1138
I wouldn't touch that thing with a ten foot pole. It looks like more trouble than it's worth, even for $200.
tornado_735
I wouldn't touch that thing with a ten foot pole. It looks like more trouble than it's worth, even for $200. 1.) RobertISaar
depending on the interior, you could probably get $200 or so just from parting that + the wheels. then scrap for another $250 or so. ................ i'd hit it..... with a 10 foot pole, after parting it. GP1138
1.) Acquire car for $200+gas money+renting trailer+hauling it to scrapyard+pulling parts off+selling old Grand Prix parts2.) mreverest72
Well, I don't pay to rent a trailer I already have one to use for free. There is gas money to spend but my local scrap yard will give me nearly $300 for it.
