Whiskey River
I can tell you where the tach wire is located under the hood but I don't know that it would work with an aftermarket tach. If you wanted to, it would probably be just as easy to put in a new cluster that has a tach.
90lum31v6euro
if i can help it, i dont want to rip off the dash, i hate the damn thing installing my head unit was a pain where is that connection under the hood?
Whiskey River
Well, it is on the Ignition Control Module (ICM). On the left side of the ICM is a plug with 5 wires, 2 of these wires are white. The white wire closest to the purple wire is the one you can try splicing into as it goes to the firewall harness, the other white wire signals the ECM, you don't want to mess with that one. As a point of reference, that wire is next to a Tan/Blk wire.
Hairdo12
i have an aftermarket tac in my car. it is very easy to install the signal wire. if you look just underneath the coil packs you will find a group of wires just below. there you will find a very thin purple wire and a very fat purple wire. tap into the thin purple wire and your tac is set. you would also use the same tap if you ever wanted to install a remote starter. of course i had it easy with the coolant overflow tank being mounted on the side of the engine compartment. however if yours is in the front of the compartment (as i think they are in 90 models) you should still be able to reach the wires from underneath with a flashlight and a little patience. Yeah, its easy, hooked up mine. Okay get, the tach wire that Whiskey pointed out, white, coming out of the ICM, that will connect to the tach singal wire from your gauge, probably green in color. Then give it a power source. I chose to splice into the wiring for the underhood light (its a mercury switch, so its always hot), the power wire from the tach will be red, then for the ground wire, I used the ground from the underhood light, the ground from the tach is black, then for the light wire on the tach, prolly white, I used the wiring for my headlight switch so when I turn the headlights on, the tach light comes on. Pretty easy, you will have to lengthen the tach wire and maybe the power and ground, depending on where you splice into.

I didnt even go through the firewall! I ran through the hood and door hinge on the driver's side, then under the interior pieces, cant even see the wires. Its hard to explain, and I dont think I did a good job there.........maybe that helped some

Bolt_Crank
the one on the data connector will only work with a digital tach, IIRC

thedeef
thx guysu make it sound so easy, just one more quick question, where is the easiest place to come thro thru the firewall i drilled a hole for my amps power cord, and i dont want to go thru that ordeal again. for my wiring i cut a piece out of the rubber plug where the hood latch cable goes through the firewall. it's high enough under the dash that it's not visible and as long as you're not off-roading in the rainforest or some crap like that you should be totally fine. that's what i did anyway. deef if you want i can send you a picture
thedeef
so where did you guys get your tachs? what brands, etc? deef
