AzAnyad14
Hey all I have a 92 lumina euro edition with 120,000 miles on it and it overheated and blew the head gasket. Shop says it'll cost 1,650 or so to fix that's more than I payed for my car three years ago wondering if it's worth it. It was a north Carolina car so it's got very minimal rust and the body is in good shape so I hate to junk it. What do you guys think? 94 olds vert
My GP blew a head gasket around the same amount of miles yours did. So far I haven't been able to make much progress on it. It's been way to hot to work on the car. 1,650 is a lot of money to dump into a car that's 20 years old. If the rest of the car is mechanically good and it doesn't have a lot of rust, might be worth it. I bet for that amount of money you could find one that doesn't have a blown head gasket and is rust free. This is where I am with mine and I really think I'm in over my head. I'm no mechanic, and I've been losing interest.

LuminaPower92
Asking me if a Lumina is worth saving? Without doubt it is. But, you definitely need to check another shop. You could find a low mileage engine for that price put in for that.
cutlassman
I had a blown head gasket on my '92 Cutlass Supreme (3.1) a couple years ago and ripped the engine apart and replaced both gaskets and other parts along the way. I'm a scientist by trade, not a mechanic, but love working on cars and found the job time-consuming, challenging, frustrating, a bit fun, and finally, rewarding. If you're not up for it, consider a used engine and find an independent shop to install. You may be out-the-door for under $1,000.
DaveB
This guy (http://williamgreen.hubpages.com/hub/Chevy-31-Liter-Engine-Leaking-Intake-Manifold-Gasket-and-Warped-Heads) says if you can change your oil you can replace your head gaskets. I believed him, used that post as a guide and did it last year on my 3.1 99 Lumina for around $350 or so in parts and tools. IF the rear shock towers are not rusting yes I believe it is worth repairing if you are on a tight budget and don't want to buy a new car or a used car with a bunch of new problems. I am averaging 25mpg and it runs very nice. Good luck on what you decide.
