ptcfast2
As of yesterday I've noticed an odd noise developing from my front end on the driver side. The best way to describe it is a baseball card in the spokes of a bike wheel? It's the worst when I'm in 1st gear (bit better in 2nd, vanishes in 3rd from what I could tell) and the clicks/ticks/buzz get faster and faster until it upshifts and the RPMs drop back down. It randomly won't happen as well, so it's hit or miss at this point - but it wasn't there before. If I shift into neutral when the noise occurs it simply vanishes so I'm inclined to believe it's a transmission , torque converter, or CV axle issue. The transmission is a 4T60-E and was rebuilt about 30,000 miles ago, torque converted replaced at the same time the transmission was rebuilt, and the CV axle on the side the noise is occurring on was about 10k miles ago and was a rebuilt axle. The transmission shifts just fine both up and down - nice and hard, no slippage at partial or full throttle or shifting, etc... Any thoughts? ricklovin93
Well worn cv axles tend to click, but is it an engine noise? If its an engine noise I would suspect an exhaust leak maybe?

The CV axle on the side the noise is coming from also will have an occasional click/clunk when turning but it's semi-random. Heck it's also very very hot outside so maybe it's just my car complaining. Edited July 1, 2012 by ptcfast2
Schurkey
vanishes in 3rd from what I could tell 3rd gear is 1:1; no planetary gear underdrive or overdrive. Noise vanishes in third gear = transmission problem; probably in the geartrain. Perhaps a failed planetary.
AL
Does it go away if you leave the gearshift in first and pick up speed, then let off the gas? Or does it stay with the RPMs? Can you get a video?
ptcfast2
What I find funny is that it only seems to happen when the car sits all day in 100 degree heat (past couple days). Once it's driven for a bit it's fine, but if it basks in the sun from 8-5 and I fire it up to go home it makes the noise until I drive it for a little bit and everything circulates/hits normal operating temp. If I firer her up after sitting all day and the sun has gone down (like staying at home all day and running out at 9PM to go to the store) it does not happen. So it seems to be temperature related...maybe it's my car also complaining with me about the extreme heat lately! Oh and for the record, it would increase as the RPMs increased and decrease the oppsite way. It would happen if I let off the gas as well, but would decrease rapidly as the engine returns to idle. If I shift into neutral when it happened the noise would vanish. I really need to check the tables in my ECU for temperature related stuff since it's modded to hell for the LG8's config - I don't think it's a coincidence that this cropped up in such hot temperatures. Must have something a bit off on TCC lockup or some other setting related to the transmission.
