GrandPrixGT
Hi guys! Since I got my 2nd GP last autumn, I've been reading the forum periodically. I never posted though; I'm no mechanic and everything I know, I mostly learned from here. I would like inputs on my transmission problem. I really love my car but the tranny has been a real pain since the beginning. My GP is an 03 GT. Second owner, really clean, no rust what so ever (rare in my area) and 96k on the clock. The trans is a rebuilt 4t65-e from when the car belonged to the previous owner. The problem is that it's shifting REALLY hard. I've never experienced that on a car before. When I start driving around, the trans shifts fine and smooth but after a while it starts acting up. The shifts are so hard that the car is rocking back and forth and it even takes my foot off the gas. I've read that it could be the PCS that's bad. I know that's a common problem but nobody seems to have shifts as hard as I have. I talked to my buddy about it (he's the one doing maintenance on my car) and he wouldn't change the PCS for me. He says it's too much hassle. Now I'm stuck with this problem and it's driving me nuts. The only way I can get the trans to shift properly all the time is by driving the car really slow.. It works but it's a real pain and other drivers behind me don't seem to enjoy it so much. I was thinking about putting a used 4t65-e HD trans in it since they're stronger than non-HD trans. I would like some inputs about the idea. Also, if you guys think it would be a good solution, I would like to know which HD trans are compatible my car. Thanks in advance for your time guys. Alex I've included a picture of the car so you guys can see it
Crazy K
i think your mileage with a used transmission may be no different, or worse. If the transmission has been rebuilt properly, then most of it is in excellent condition. I recommend to replace the PCS, which does require a frame drop to remove the side cover. I've done something similar two months ago for a broken parking pawl, and took less than a day to do. and only required lower the driver's side fo the frame about 12 inches. (specifics can be talked about if you choose this route later) Another thing you might consider is installing an auxiliary/aftermarket transmission cooler, as too much heat is bad for transmission. This is obvious easier than a partial overhaul and something I (and some but not all others) recommend. It may reduce the chances of the glitch which causes the malfunction/failsafe type issues such as you see here, and even if is doesn't is still worth a shot to try as it has excellent benefits for any transmission anyhow.
