base93lumina
Okay, so when i bought the GTP, the car had a knock that would show up when you accelerated the car from a stop and decelerated the car to a stop. But, it would only be single knock each time. At first i thought it was the strut mounts as they were the originals, so i changed them; no change. Then i saw the tie rod ends, ball joints and control arm bushings looked original (which they were) so i changed those; no change. Then, i discovered the upper torque struts were loose, like the rubber bushings were flopping around in the struts, so i changed those; made it a little better. The engine is pretty solid that i can tell (before those you could grab the motor and rock it with your hands). Now, the lower engine mount looks like it might be sagging a lil bit on the back but not really enough to do much. So im not sure if thats the cause of the rest of it. But, what im wondering is, since this car does have 201k miles on it, is it possible the bushings on all four frame mounts could be bad? And do they go bad; and if they do, how hard are they to change? Or would something else be doing it?
rich_e777
I have a similar problem on my CS that i suspect the exhaust is to blame. I took my car in to a shop not long ago for a quote on some custom exhaust work and the guy mentioned that where the downpipe has the 3 or 4 bolt connection that rotationg the engine wears the seal out at this point and will make a popping/clunking sound on accel and decel (because something is popping in and then back into place). Im thinking that part is called an exhaust flange gasket and goes for less than $10 at autozone. I also have changed all my mounts at the same time and still have excessive engine movment which seems to be the case for alot of w-bosies with the stock mount set up that ive seen. Now some of the guys have taken the fluid filled mounts and filled them with construction adhesive(Liquid Nails) and have said it holds tighter than the solids. For the uppers i still have the dog-bone style mounts and i dont think they are worth a crap brand new so im going with some of off a GTP with the cube shaped rubber pieces but they dont really seem any better. Andrew
id aim for the lower motor and trans mounts. you can get solid ones for our 2nd gens that are a little more money, but last alot longer. pretty easy to replace i hear. unbolt the uppers, a jack and a 2x4. base93lumina
Thanks man, yeah i noticed the lower passenger mount looks a bit iffy. When i changed the gaskets on the downpipe, i noticed the motor and trans appeared to be sitting a bit low in the back. I have the solid motor mount, i just need to find the solid trans mount.
