Hello everyone,

I am new to the w-body forum. I have been a member of clubgp for a few years now and through them I have learned the experience and knowledge of this forum. I am here with a question, most likely I will be here with many more in the future, but for now I am here with one. I drive a 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 3.1 engine. My engine is getting old, time is taking her toll on it, so I thought I would help to revitalize her. I want to do a partial rebuild and add a turbo to her. I know this has been done before so I figured I would come here to ask my questions. I would like to know what all I am going to need to buy/make exactly to accomplish this project. I need a shopping list, if you will, because I am saving up my money now so I can start this project in the summer. I would also like to know about how long this process may take, I need to know whether or not to buy a beater to drive around during the process. Oh and lastly, if anyone has done this before I wouldn't mind knowing a ball park price for the whole thing. Thanks a lot guys and I am really pumped about all this, I can't wait.

I also posted this in the TGP section just to get a variety of ideas.

Here's a major thread that has several referances to other posts; including parts.

If you don't know what you need to buy, then chances are you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. I'm not telling you not to do it or that you can't, but you should know exactly what you are doing before you ever even start buying parts. If you really want to do this then I would start reading about it now, so that you understand everything that's going on. I suggest you read Corky Bell's "Maximum boost", and live by it. :P :)

OK, I will do just that. I will read up on it and everything. And just for the record I know most of the things I need, its the little things I'm not sure of that I am asking about. That is why I would greatly appreciate it if someone who has done this before could post a list of parts and such for me. I know that I will need...

a custom crossover pipe

a custom down pipe

a modified exhaust manifold

a modified air intake

vaccum and coolant lines for turbo

a blow off valve

an intercooler (no clue what kind)

a used (preferably rebuilt turbo) not sure on size though???

Thats about all I have gathered so far, I would love to know what else I am missing. But I will take your advice and start reading. Thanks.

first you need to know that it is gunna cost you an arm and a leg to do this .....like around 2,000-3,500 just to buy the parts then depending on how much you work on it ,it can take anywhere from one week(working all day) to a month(a few hours a night.then you have to get your timing just right or you'll blow the cartrige right out of the front of the turbo(and a garret T-28 goes nice with a 3.1l). so thats just the tip of the iceberg of what has to e done and what it costs......and don't buy a 3.4L they suck!

...have a 3.1 because that is one of the best engines gm ever made...besides the 3.8

As a DOHC owner, all i can say:

*edit*. Your right Redfox...no more debating this on my part...LOL

Oh, jeese... not again!

Go search for the posts that will desribe in great detail on opinions expressed on the pushrod / DOHC debate.

And DON'T make me get up on my soapbox a third time...

I don't plan on buying brand new parts for this addition. The turbo and all of its accessories can be used for all I care. The only new parts will be the stuff for the partial engine rebuild. I do not expect this to be cheap, all I am hoping is that it will be less expensive than an L67 swap. Do you know where I may be able to find the parts I will need, and you said a garret t-28. Ok will a t-3 work as well. Please let me know I really want to do this. Thanks.
