jerseyharold
The car runs well with no codes, it's just very sluggish off the line. I'd almost say the trans is slipping but don't think it is. I once read that if the MAF is dirty it can restrict transmission pressure and slow acceleration. Any ideas on what may be causing it? Thanks. RobertISaar
do you feel it shift through every gear? it's possible you have a dead/stuck shift solenoid and instead of starting out in 1st, you're in 2nd/3rd.
jerseyharold
It goes through every gear smoothly, without delayed engagements. The engine runs well with no roughness. There has been what is probably a wrist-pin knock from the engine for the past couple of years that I've been nursing along. Is there a knock sensor that may be retarding the timing? RobertISaar
yes, but if the knock sensor was going that crazy, you should have set DTCs by now. you would also have horrible fuel economy and lack of power at all speeds and in every gear. luckily, if it is bad, it's in an easy location on the 3x00s, right by the oil filter. rich17
My 96 didnt throw a rear o2 code when the cat went bad. Probally the cat IMO
RobertISaar
that would still cause a horrible loss in power at all times and have the fuel economy hit to go with it. also, to answer a question: 98 3100 W-bodies didn't use a transmission that has line pressure controlled by the PCM. rich17
My 3100 ran normal under light load conditions with a clogged cat. But never drove it enough to know the mileage. Theyre very common for cats clogging. Im just saying it could be one of his problems. Whats the mileage?
jerseyharold
Whats the mileage? The car has 146,000 miles.

jerseyharold
Is there an easy way to test the cat for excessive back pressure, without cutting into the exhaust?
rich17
Might be able to get ahold of the scanner and actually see what the rear o2 is reading vs what it should
