TeeJay3800 Posted October 28, 2003 Report Posted October 28, 2003 I read somewhere that your engine takes longer to reach operating temp when the catalytic converter is removed. This seems to be true for me as ever since I put a straight pipe in place of the cat, the motor has taken a much longer time to warm up on cold mornings that it used to. Does this make sense to anyone? Quote
C-REX Posted October 28, 2003 Report Posted October 28, 2003 the cat would stop some of the exhaust gases from leaving the engine and thats why it would take longer for the engine to heat up.I would have just bought a racing cat converter. Quote
mfewtrail Posted October 28, 2003 Report Posted October 28, 2003 mine warms up pretty quickly even on cool/cold mornings w/ no cat..basically the same warmup time as my other cars w/ cats..although I do have my muffler placed right where the cat was which could help w/ warmup time being that I have a restriction/muffler right after the downpipe..anyways, my truck has the mufflers at the rear and no cat warms up pretty slowly although it runs cooler than most other vehicles do normally. Brian P Posted October 28, 2003 Report Posted October 28, 2003 your exhaust must smell like ass without converters. I don't know what part of you says "this is good". It's an integral part of the car. Use it Quote
TeeJay3800 Posted October 28, 2003 Author Report Posted October 28, 2003 As far as smell, yes and no. The exhuast smell is a lot stronger, but IMO it smells a lot better (better is relative of course). And I didn't do this for performance, I did it for sound. The exhuast note is a lot louder while remaining tuned with the Flowmaster rumble. That is why I removed it and it does what I wanted it to do. So I don't plan on having a converter anytime soon. With the stock catalyst it was near silent Quote

gp90se Posted October 28, 2003 Report Posted October 28, 2003 my 3.1 without a cat did take a few more minutes to warm up then it did with 1. With the highflow, it took a little longer but to be honest, it doesnt matter b/c I always let the car idle for 3-5 minutes before it goes anywhere. I origianally removed mine becasue the stock 1 was dying and started smelling funky, so I pulled it and holy crap did it stink. I ran in w/o the cat for 5 monthsm bought a catco high flow for $50 (comming back off next year after the sticker) and the smell went away. cat burns unburny fuel/emissions before exiting so thats obviously why. -Jeff Quote

sonyman87 Posted October 28, 2003 Report Posted October 28, 2003 well i have a magnaflow cat no resignator and duel flowmasters it took 40 mins for my car to warmup so the thermistate would open so i could flush the coolant system! No driving was involved just turned it on and pulled it up on ramps... let it sit.. reved a littel to help out but it really didnt want to get hot with the hood up. Quote

It's got a strong exhaust smell, but not from the missing cat, but from running so rich. It was the same before and after, the turbo just likes to spool a little faster now.. 8) Quote
mfewtrail Posted October 28, 2003 Report Posted October 28, 2003 my 93 doesn't smell bad either, smells a bit stronger than with the stock exhaust but it's not that bad IMO, the TGP w/ the high flow cat on it smells almost identical to my car btw..... Quote

Brian P Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 I dunno smelly, a '94-96 GP in white drove past me today sounding QUITE loud. I bet if you just put on 1 flowmaster you'll be surprised... Quote
TeeJay3800 Posted October 29, 2003 Author Report Posted October 29, 2003 I bet if you just put on 1 flowmaster you'll be surprised... Yeah, it depends on the model, but even simply replacing your stock muffler with a Flowmaster will make it significantly louder. However, you can get Flowmasters that will only make it slightly louder if thats what you want. Of course the key is not just making it louder, but increasing the sound quality along with the volume. Anyone can rip the muffler off and the exhuast will be louder, but a good, well-engineered muffler like a Flowmaster will give a nice tuned sound. Quote
