Cougnut
Hey guys, My 91 z34 (automatic) just made a round trip from Las Vegas, NV all the way to New York and back. (we put 5000 miles on it for the round trip). Anyways when close to no problems (I didn't correctly tighten the T-60 bolt when I did my front rotors so we broke down in Nebraska for 17 hours). Besides that, I just got back a week ago, and all of a sudden the tranny is making strange noises, and not shifting into OD. Think it could have something to do with going from 12 degrees in PA to 100 degrees in NV? I had the transmission flushed with the new filter and pan about 15,000 miles ago, and the fluid is good. Could it be something really simple? I'm not trying to spend a grand on a car that's worth 1500. Thanks in advance, Edited May 17, 2012 by Cougnut
virtuetovice
Can't say for sure that it's toast but when i had trans issues it was a few hrs in the local you-pull-it, 120 bucks and a totaled lower-mileage car.
LuminaPower92
My Z has a terrible whine. I know where its coming from. What gears has the whine? What other noises is it doing?

I think it's 4th, won't switch into OD either. It'll go up to 55 with about 3 1/2 rpms.
RobertISaar
4th = OD. 55MPH at 3500RPM is 2nd gear. or 3rd gear with a LOT of torque converter slip.
Galaxie500XL
I'd kinda wonder if the issue is the torque converter..if the ECM detects excess slip when engaging the TCC, the ECM inhibits 4th gear to try to prevent problems, but you should see a stored trouble code if this is the case...additionally, the torque converter engages the front pump on the transmission, if it's very sloppy, this could lead to your noise. Cougnut
Update, took it to a transmission shop to get it diagnosed (I couldn't get the car past 30 mph). They took a look at it for free, drove it on the freeway and brought the car back. The transmission shifts sloppy into 2nd now and the noise is now gone. No idea what he did to it when he took it on a test drive; but it's working now. They also told me my transmission fluid was looking burnt. All in all, I paid nothing and the car is running once again.
