John M
The old cutty has had a sticky shifter would spray the button and it seemed to ease the problem. But now it seems that it might be an interlock problem. Can anyone tell me what the system is; IE electric or mechanical? Need to get it home the groc. parking lot is lonely
GP1138
In the meantime... pull off the console top, get a flathead screwdriver, and you will see the place the shift cable eyelet (in white) mounts to the shifter assembly. Pop it off and you can manually shift between gears. Troubleshoot the interlock when you get it home.
1988PhantomFE3
Make sure it's not at the other end at the trans, you don't want to be the cause of an accident. If it's not a quick temp fix that will get her home, I'd tow it just to be safe and not stressed.

John M
Got it home raised the plastic cover, used a screw driver to release the lock. Am thinking that it is sticking. will investigate later. J
rktmanfj
I've fixed this twice recently... on a Ford Ranger, and an Acura MDX. Check and see if your brake lights are working. If not, it's probably the switch that's causing it.
John M
Update; Took the car to the shop, There was a servo on the shifter prob a $5 part. Well of course a dealer only item where you must but the whole shifter mechanism. Part was $250.00 + 150.00 to install. here are some pics of the culprit. I probably never would have found this on my own. While the car was at the shop I had the timing belt done for the first time. That was $850.00 because the hydro tensioner was needed. Dealer only item for $138.00. You are welcome GM.

I'll definately remember this in case it happens to me one day. Heck, maybe I should go to the JY and get one of those servo's now!

John M
I see that now. If I had known I probably would have gone with the disconnect option. IF I had only known........... J
white96supreme
The interlock on my column shift did the same thing a few years ago, now it keeps you from shifting into gear when you depress the brake pedal. It still clicks like it wants to work, but a firm jerk on the shifter usually takes care of it......stupid car!!!! I really don't want to pull the column apart and really don't want to pay someone to do it either, so i'm just going to live with it.
