1994RedVert
I have the same problem. I think I am going to try and buy a new motor for my top. But if there is a cheaper way to fix it I am all ears and eyes. lol
94 olds vert
Check the fluid in reservoir. The motors behind the driver side rear seat. Edited April 30, 2012 by 94 olds vert
oldmangrimes
Check both hydraulic rams. When I got my vert, my top was slow and I thought it was a weak pump. So I had the pump rebuilt ($$) and it didn't help! I looked closely and saw that one of the rams was actually broken on top. At first glance, it looked like it was still connected. But a closer inspection saw that it was actually broken off, although the broken piece was still aligned with the ram. The good ram was doing all the work, but it was just enough to do it slowly with some help. The bad ram might have been leaking internally as well, and not translating the hydraulic pressure into linear movement. Anyway, I bought a pair of used rams off of ebay (for much less than the motor rebuild) and it's been working great ever since. So you may have a bad pump motor, low fluid level (check for leaks under the back seat and trunk) or a bad ram. When the top is going up, check to make sure both sides are going up evenly. If they aren't, it may be the ram.
1994RedVert
Where is the ram located? I will check it all out tomorrow. Where do you get more hydraulic fluid for it? And what type and weight do you use. Sorry if I am lost, but this is my first Cutlass Convertible. I love it, but need to learn a lot. Rams (or cylinders) are located on each side of the car behind the rear windows inside of the convertible top (one on each side). They look like shocks. The motor and cylinders use Dexron transmission fluid. The fluid goes in the convertible top pump which is located behind the back seat (accessible from the trunk-just lift the convertible top well up to see it).
