Psych0matt
So I tore my brakes off a bit ago to paint the calipers and brackets. The drivers side one went back on just fine (as it should), but the passenger rear seems to be having an issue. Everything goes back together just fine, except the top bolt that holds the caliper to the bracket. Now it's not crossthreaded or anything because I can screw it all the way in or out from the front or the back by hand just fine, but when I put it into the bracket, I tighten it about 80% of the way, and then it gets a little snug. Not like threading issue, but its almost as if it's bottoming out in the bracket. It actually seems to push the bracket out a ways instead of sliding the last 1/4" into it, which obviously throws the caliper off and makes it so the hub wont spin. Anyone had this issue before? I've tried both bolts and they both work fine on the bottom, but not the top... I'm gonna have to tear it back off when I have some more time (I have to head to work in a few), but I've never had an issue like this before
Schurkey
Put the top bolt in first, see if the problem transfers to the bottom bolt? Caliper and bracket clean? Pads not hanging up on rotor due to scoring or other defect? Rotor not hanging up on hub due to rust or other defect? '92 rear calipers? How did you handle getting the piston back into the caliper? Spinning the piston with the dumbass little cube tool is a waste of time. I pull the park brake lever off (one nut, one washer) and push the piston STRAIGHT in. Let the screw spin on the little O-ring instead of spinning the caliper on the huge square-cut seal.
Psych0matt
I should specify, brakes are 2000+, and the issue doesn't transfer with the bolt. Caliper/bracket are freshly painted and clean, and the rotors are basically new. It seems as though once I hit a certain point it just cocks the caliper and torquing it out of line. gtp237
The top bolt is different than the bottom bolt. I accidentally switched them once and had a similar problem. I believe one of the bolts has a rubber end. That end likes to pull off the pin and get stuck in the slide. When that happens it spaces that side of the caliper out. I don't know of that's your problem but it's worth checking out.
Psych0matt
Yep, something similar to say the least. Popped the bracket out and felt around with a pick I had, and sure enough, a big piece of rubber sleeve was stuck pretty good down in there. Pulled it out and everything works now Now I just need to bleed everything again
