Mur
I've had my 93 lumina 3.1 for about a year now, did the first oil change myself today. I usually bring it to a quick change place, thought i'd save some money and do it myself. The issue I ran into was when looking up the filter at the parts store i noticed the filter was smaller than the ones i get for my 88 Cutlass Ciera 2.8. Since both motors are similar i thought maybe it was an error at the parts place. I looked up a few other 93 3.1 cars and all listed the same filter as my 88 cutlass. Still thinking it was an error i bought the larger filter but when i took the old filter off the lumina it was the smaller size filter put on by the quick lube place. The filters are the same diameter but the lumina one is at least 2 inches shorter, no clearance issues the longer filter fit fine on the car. Any ideas why the sizes are different? urbex
I'm assuming they're PF47 and PF52 if they're AC Delco. Not sure on other brands part numbers, but they are both the same filter and will both work. I always go with the longer one, because why not? It's got more element inside... RobertISaar
correct, the PF47 and PF52 and it's knockoffs are interchangable. and i would never run a PF47 style unless there was a significant space issue. what kind of filter did you end up using, please say something other than FRAM or rebranded FRAM? ScoobyDoo82
Just curious, why do you say no-go on the 47s?
urbex
Well, why would you not want more filter?
ScoobyDoo82
Well my car calls for 47 so why would I put the wrong filter on it?
RobertISaar
Well, why would you not want more filter? correct. all things being equal, the PF52 is exactly a PF47 with more filtering element/area. that means for the couple of cents more it sometimes costs, you get more oil flow and filtering capacity for absolutely no downsides. urbex
Yeah. I've used a PF52 since I bought the car. I would rather have more filtering capacity.
Mur
I'm up in Canada so I use the Canadian Tire "motomaster" filter....they're just the cheap ones. I looked up the 93 Regal, Cutlass Supreme and Grand Prix 3.1 and they all called for the longer filter. I agree, might as well use the longer one, more filtering capacity
base93lumina
I run the longer filter on all my 6-60's, i like having more filtering, plus it holds a little bit more oil as well
rich17
Napa golds call for a 1040 for the short and a 1036 for the long and can be used on 3800 SII as well. Not sure on the S1 but im sure cheap ass GM probally used the same
alec_b
The PH52 is usually found on the 4.3's in blazers, especially the ones with the remote mounted oil filter up front.
Euro
Mental note for next time to NEVER buy the 47's again. I never remember them being that friggin tiny
Addicted To Boost
I've always run a PF52 on every first gen GP I've owned. I tried to put a PF52 on the 04 GP and it wouldn't fit. Have to run the PF47 style filter on it.
RobertISaar
sounds like a perfect excuse for a remote mount kit.
paulo57509
I posed a question on another forum regarding the PF47 vs. PF52 install on the 4.3 in Astro/Safari vans. At some point, the application catalog changed from spec'ing the PF52 to the PF47. I asked if anyone could speculate on why this change occurred. A guy that used to work on the assembly line in MD (IIRC) chimed in saying that there were instances of the longer PF52 getting bashed during engine installation into the chassis. So GM made a MY change and started installing the PF47 at the engine plant.
