Summer Tire Choices

I'm getting some 16x8 crosslace wheels and I'm trying to find tires for them. I think I want to go with 255/50/16, but I might stick w/ 245/50/16 to help with fuel mileage a little. I need a summer performance tire w/ a AA traction rating, hopefully a W speed rating and obviously I want as high of a treadwear rating as I can get (and of course A temperature rating). I'd like to spend about $100 a tire, but I realize that's going to be almost impossible. I do get pretty good prices through my dad's shop. I haven't really found too much yet, but I'll have my dad look tomorrow, too. I wish they still made Toyo T1-S as I've had them before and loved them or could afford Eagle F1 GS-D3. Thanks in advance for any input.

Why are you stuck on summer tires? You typically get 20-30k miles out of them and they are fairly expensive. It's a w-body, not a BMW M3.

The Firstone Potenza P019 Grid is a good and affordable all-season performance tire with an aggressive uni-directional tread design.

Those are pretty much the only ones I've found with exactly what I wanted without costing more than that.

Well, since I can't seem to find much of what I'm looking for, I might be open to all-season performance tires. I had Toyo T1-S tires, which were of the specs I'm looking for, on my green GP and absolutely loved them and they didn't cost that much ($105 ea.). I like to have summer tires in the nicer months and snow tires in the snowy ones. I'm not wanting something for snow since they will not see any. Anything to help it handle better is a big plus to me and I'm not too worried about tread life too much. I can't find the tire you're talking about.

I have settled on 245/50's. I get better prices through my dad's shop than I've seen on TireRack and DiscountTire, so I'd like to get something he can get, but I'm open to the others if I have to. I know the Fuzions aren't real good, but they're only $95 each, so I'm leaning towards them. So far, here are my choices (I am open to others):

shop:

Falken Ziex ZE912 W-Rated (all-season 360 A A)

Firestone Firehawk Wideoval Indy 500 (W, summer 320 A A)

Fuzion ZRi (W, summer 320 A A)

Firestone Firehawk Wideoval AS (V, all-season, 400 A A)

Discount:

Kumho Ecsta ASX (W, all-season, 420 AA A)

Cooper Zeon RS3-A (W?, all-season, 500 AA? A)

TireRack:

Kumho ASX

g-Force Sport Comp-2

It doesn't appear that Mastercraft makes high-performance tires anymore...was trying to find an equivalent to the Cooper Zeon RS3-A's

Bridgestone Potenza G019 Grid? they only come in up to 225 for 16's

Man I was going to say some Continental ContiSportContacts or Extreme DWS's, but none of them come in that size. I love those tires. Just installed a set of DWS's on a customers S8 and he LOVES them. He had pilot sports on before and he actually came back to the shop to thank me for my recommendation of the Conti's.

anyone have any input? It looks like my dad will have to special order any of those tires and tirerack is more w/ shipping than discount, so I'm going to have to go with them. Here are my choices: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/filterTireProducts.do?cs=245&ar=50&rd=16&counter=4&sw=false&fcpr=&fclr=&fcsr=&fcs=false&fcb=&pager.offset=0 I'm thinking either Kumho Ecsta ASX, Cooper Zeon RS3-A or Falken Ziex ZE912 (in order on the list...all W-rated)

I agree with going for an all-season for the treadwear rating.

It's okay to use an all-season in the summer, they just suck in the winter compared to a dedicated snow tire.

It's just that you also compromise dry and wet traction for some snow and ice traction, which I don't need. However, the difference in most I'm looking at is only 20-80 points.

I've heard very good things about the Falken 912's. I was planning on running them on my xlaces as summer tires.
I might just go with them. I'm still waiting to see how much of a backorder I'd be looking at through my dad's shop before I make a decision.

Big O has the g-Force ones for $147 a piece...the cheapest I've found and there's a store only 3 blocks from my house. Too bad the $80 rebate isn't for BFG

I'm going to see what my dad can actually get, but if it's nothing, I'm going to get the g-Force from Big O, I'm pretty sure. 12 mo. no interest plus a $50 "rebate" ...unless I can be convinced otherwise

Anyone think I would have any problems running the 255's? I like that they are closer to stock height and the extra dry traction i'll get. The only ones my dad can get are the wide oval indy 500's. They would end up costing only 70 dollars less...same w the falkens.

I got approved for a Big O card, so I'm going to be getting the 255/50/16 g-Force Sport Comp 2's when I get my cc in the mail. Should be getting the wheels this weekend, so hopefully I'll have the wheels ready for the tires by next weekend.

  • 2 weeks later...

Big O ended up selling off their BFG Sport Comps before I got my card, so I ended up getting some Falken ZE-912's. Not really what I wanted, but should suffice and were only like $110 each. I'm going to mount and install them tomorrow night.

I was going to suggest the Ecsta ASX's. I'm getting mine installed tomorrow, 245/50's. Seem to be a pretty nice tire from what I've seen. They were like $104 a piece from TireRack.

I got the tires on the wheels and installed last night. I need to take some pictures. I'm waiting on center caps and I'm replacing the lugnuts w/ black chrome ones.

I really wanted a summer tire, but when Big O sold out of the ones I wanted, I didn't really have any choices left unless I wanted to spend bank on the Goodyears. I got the Falkens because I was tired of waiting and the Kumhos would have been more money with shipping.

I LOVE my Pilot Super Sports, but they are $$$
I wouldn't have wanted to spend that much on all-seasons especially. Too bad you can't get T1-S Toyos anymore. They came in 245/50ZR16, but their replacement, the T1R, doesn't come in that size plus they cost a lot more.

Nice tire for summer and wet performance.

Worst tire I've ever, used in the snow. We sold the Bonneville GXP the winter after we used those tires for the first time. It was not fun even for me to drive that car in the snow with those tires on it.

that's why high-performance all-season is an oxy-moron. I'm sure the ZE-912's will be crap in the snow, although not as bad as Eagle F1's, but that's what I have snow tires for. I'll lose some wet and dry traction in the name of being just a tiny little bit better in the snow. Edited by pwmin

I wouldn't ask my enemy to buy ASX's. They're good for maybe 20-25k miles tops, and they never wear right. I have yet to see a set of those that aren't cupped/feathered/noisier than hell. That, and they don't grip all that well from my experience, and the slightest bit of cold/slippery conditions INCLUDING rain upset them.

Haven't seen many issues with the ZE-912's though. I've never been much of a Falken fan either but they seem to be getting better and better.

Rich went through last winter with them and faired pretty decently I believe. Granted we didn't get a whole lot of snow to really test em. Going with 245's on a 6.5" wheel I'm going with a winter set up for next winter
