Ben Cartwright
96 Olds 3.1L, 85K miles. Autolite group 78 battery is 4.5 years old. Alternator was replaced at 20K. Son has this car now and it wouldn't start after he got off work the other night. Says he listened to music on the car stereo and used his droid phone during his 30 minute lunch break. The gps charging cord was also plugged into the cig lighter but the gps was not hooked up. Second time this has happened in the last year or so. The charging cord for his droid is the motorola one that has the light in it, and this cord stays plugged in 24/7. The stereo is an aftermarket unit but I don't think it pulls that much power. This one http://www.amazon.com/Dual-XHD6420-4...236860&sr=8-60 Charged the battery then load tested it with two different testers. Both said the battery was ok. Checked voltage output of alternator and found 14.5 at idle, and after turning on highbeams, stereo, and full heat the voltage stabilized at 14.14, also at idle. So it seems to test out ok, but doesn't it seem strange that it goes dead like that after just 30 minutes of use? Thanks
dan0512
check the battery cable and the jumper post by the battery. Corrosion in the cable can cause charging issues. Had similar problem.
