redmetrix Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 (edited) So I have this 98 Regal GS with 207,000 miles and it has been working great engine/transmission wise. A couple days ago my brother used a power washer around and underneath the engine bay because he wanted to clean any oil residue off so he could diagnose an oil leak. Now the trans shifts hard during every shift: 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4. It goes into over drive lockup smoothly as normal. So what happened here? We have taken the battery cable off for a while and put it back on; after that it shifts normally for the first 5-10 minutes, then the hard shifting returns. Edited April 14, 2012 by redmetrix Quote
Addicted To Boost Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 Check your fluid level/condition? Quote
GP1138 Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 Any SES light in conjunction with this behavior? Even for a minute? Sounds to me like water got up in a sensor or connector or something. Quote
redmetrix Posted March 28, 2012 Author Report Posted March 28, 2012 Fluid level/condition looks good. Yes, the SES light is now on since the problem showed up. Quote
superdan333 Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 Check the plug that goes into the side of the transaxle. Could have pulled a wire out of the connector with the pressure washer. If its the pressure control wire all shifts will be hard. Dan Quote

Code P1811 would be indicative of that, but that code usually does not set the SES light, so you may have something else going on. Quote
redmetrix Posted March 31, 2012 Author Report Posted March 31, 2012 (edited) We've got two issues at the moment. The car idles rough, if you are cruising at 60 MPH and let off the throttle, the idle drops down to 200 then bounces between 200 and 800. The hard shifting does not occur until you've been driving it for a while, say more than 15-20 minutes. Replaced the MAF with a different used one two different times, that didn't change anything. Cleaned the IAC, tried two different used TPS sensors, still no change. From research online, these symptoms could be caused by a bad connection to the PCM or the PCM itself. Cleaned the connectors going to the PCM with contact cleaner, still no change. Is it possible the PCM was damaged? Is it possible to use the PCM out of a different car? redmetrix Posted April 14, 2012 Author Report Posted April 14, 2012 Figured out the problem. The "Engine Emissions" fuse was burned out in the under hood fuse box. Quote
