petty43fan Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 I was wondering what the guys with 3.1's are running for exhaust systems. right now i'm running a glass pack along with the stock dual mufflers. It doesnt sound bad but i wat something a little more agressive sounding, but not too ricey sounding. just trying to get some ideas...thanks Quote
RobertISaar Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 cut off the exhaust either right before or after the cat. it will sound more agressive than it has any right to. Quote
ctracer Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 currently im stock but i have been looking...what i want to do is do a muffler delete and shorter res with cat. try looking up some videos on youtube. if you want to stay with mufflers then i would suggest borla universal and have them welded on, borlas can make anything sound good. I would actually go with Magnaflows on these engines just due to every other muffler wanting to make the exhaust sound raspy as hell and just not good in general Quote
MonteCarloChick Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Flowmaster Delta Flow 40 welded to stock tubing/cat Quote
rich_e777 Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 cut off the exhaust either right before or after the cat. it will sound more agressive than it has any right to. Wouldnt you have backpressure issues if you did that? And could you still pass an emissions test if everything was to come off after the cat? Quote
RobertISaar Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Wouldnt you have backpressure issues if you did that? And could you still pass an emissions test if everything was to come off after the cat? you can still pass emissions as long as the cat is there and functioning. and backpressure? why does everyone think you NEED backpressure? stuff a potato into your exhaust if you want backpressure. skitchin Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Not sure on the laws where everyone else is at, but apparently Missouri has some rules regarding state inspections that you must have a catalytic-converter(if you vehicle is past a certain year, 70's or so), and a fully enclosed air cleaner(i.e. stock box). So might not need cat for emissions but around here you can fail a state inspection for not having one. Back in the day I was considering an electronic cutout valve in place of my cat, but I have yet to hear a V6 that sounded good running open heads. Quote
gp1991 Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Im running stock with a pretty decent amount of rust/holes in the mufflers. Quote
RobertISaar Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Im running stock with a pretty decent amount of rust/holes in the mufflers. and it probably sounds awesome. there aren't many ways to go wrong on the OHV 660s. Quote
Galaxie500XL Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 If Missouri is like most states, it only has to be PRESENT, not necessarily functioning.... Quote
gp1991 Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 it does sound pretty good , i think it sounds the best around 2000 rmp lol Quote
custom_90lumina Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 or if you state is like wis. and you dont have emissions tests just do what i did cat delete and go to j/y find a good muffler take a grinder cut it open gut it and weld back shut so it looks like you still have a muffler if you get pulled over Quote
skitchin Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Where my car is registered(outside of St. Louis County) I don't need emissions, but also because my car is so old(95) it doesn't need to pass them anyhow. Since we're on the topic, how hard is it to tune the cat/o2 sensors out of an OBD 1.5 vehicle? OBD 2 conversion required? Quote
RobertISaar Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 no 3100/3.4 car before 1996 has a secondary O2 sensor (meaning the one behind a cat in OBD2 cars), so you can remove it and it would never know. if you were trying to remove the only O2 sensor, you would disable closed loop fueling, which is possible to do and the tune can be setup for it, but why? Addicted To Boost Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 Keep the cat (if it's in good shape and not plugged), add a long resonator, and delete the mufflers, just run piping to the tips. Quote
Ramblin Garage Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 anyone have videos of any of these setups? Quote
skitchin Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 I know for a fact my cat has a minimum of 100,000 miles on it, might be about that time. Quote
LuminaPower92 Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 2.5 Stainless Piping Magnaflow High Flow Cat Dual Knock off Magnaflow Mufflers Quote
revnrob Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 We have it already,, but they are not really enforceing it yet,,,I think they are letting it go for a few years then they are going to come down hard and say it was a law for a few years so there is no excuse why shouldnt get it done!!! typical under the radar politics,,, http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/vehicles/im.htm Quote
rich_e777 Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 LOL, i remember being a kid sticking potatoes in tailpipes, thought it was hilarious. I honestly dont remember ever having a lose of power when i got my cat cut off in a parking lot, it was just unbelievably loud but not a bad sounding loud IIRC. I had the guy set up the exhaust for cat-back system after that so i might just unbolt the damn thing and piss the neighboros off again. I can always wear earplugs:lol: Quote
