cchpounder
I was trying to replace my driver side axle on a 96 cutlass supreme 105,000 miles 3.1 engine. I was unable to remove it. I used several different pry bars, screw drivers, hammers, slide hammers , you name it. it would not come out. I have removed several axles before. I took it to a suspension shop and they tired to remove it, with many different tools air hammer etc etc.. It would not come out ..... Not to my knowledge until later on I saw that they left the old inner tulip in the axle and connected it to a new axle... If you know what I mean. It eventually started to develop a leak which could be the seal , the case or both actually. The car still runs the same besides the leak which is getting worse now. The car sometimes cuts off if I hit the brake hard. I was reading on another site about someone with the same problem. I must mention Like that guy the axle is not original it was replaced with an auto zone axle at about 75,000 miles. The other guy pulled his whole trans and was told the axle will never come out because some aftermarket axles used lips that were too large. At this point I may have to sale it as for a little bit of nothing. A few shops I went to "say" they can get it out but its no guarantee that the seal is whats actually leaking so i may get it done and find out its leaking somewhere else. I'm really not trying to put another trans in this car.. I'm really at a stands still with this car.
GOT2B GM
Get a bigger prybar?
19Cutlass94
Did you take the wheel hub out? Two prybars (one on either side) usually works pretty good.
cchpounder
Yes I used a few different pry bars . and yes I took the axle out of the Hub before trying to remove it. Also a shop tried getting it out also, with no luck
brake
The only ones I've had trouble with needed to be spinned while prying it out so the c clip would line up...but I've never pulled an axle on one of these cars
19Cutlass94
Did you take the hub out? or just remove the axle from the hub... Try putting some tranny fluid arounf the seal, and into the seal if possible.
AMP
hey I did this to day except it was on a 87 chrysler newyorker with a 2.5 inline 4 N/A
cchpounder
I removed it from the hub, but I didn't remove the hub from the car. Maybe Ill give it one more try before I sale it as is. it's been leaking for a few months maybe it'll come out.
19Cutlass94
Take the hub off the car, and then position the axle so when it pops itll come out through the knuckle. The straighter the better.

55trucker
It sounds as tho the shop you took the car to (and the slider you used) did not have a heavy enough slide hammer to overcome the *seized* situation you have there. The *average* slider is only 2 1/2lbs., there is a 5 pounder, and for heavy trucks a 10lb. slider. See if you can get your hands on one of the *big boys*. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if you find that the end of the output shaft in the trans has been mushroomed by someone/something in the past. It doesn't take much of any sort of a glancing blow to disfigure the end of the shaft. http://www.google.com/search?q=10+slide+hammer&hl=en&biw=1421&bih=788&prmd=imvns&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&psj=1&ei=CwNcT53EFoLx0gH-_MibCg&ved=0CEYQrQQ Edited March 11, 2012 by 55trucker

AS far as the condition of the output shaft ...You have me wondering If I should even should mess with it at this point. Th inner tulip ..I don't know if that's the correct name.. is pretty slashed up.. You can tell someone used the c shaped axle tool puller tool and hammered it onto the tulip , but evidently it didn't budge.
