2002 3100 in my 96?

Recommended Posts

I found an 02 3100 motor with trans attached for 100 bucks. Haven't checked it out yet but if it's possible to just drop it right in place of mine, and it runs well, I'll buy it.

Will I run into issues putting a newer motor in my car? Again, my car is a 96 GP SE 3100.

It has a 4t60-E on it. Found out it's got pretty high miles, so about all I'd want to use is the intake and even then I'd have to fuck with the EGR, and i don't wanna do that.. gonna leave it where it is.

thanks anyway!

the guy that owns the car just told me he'd give me the intakes/throttle body etc for 25 bucks if i take em off myself. decent.

forgive the n00b questions that have probably been asked a dozen times but the search hasn't been friendly to me today;

I would imagine that everything attached to the intakes will be going with it..injectors, sensors, etc... should I use my 96 injectors or the 02 injectors? I will use my current TPS and IAC as they are both new and i see they interchange but the injector part #s are different from 00+

I can just leave the rails attached when I'm pulling the intake, yes?

If I have the EGR valve from the 02 intake will it work w/ my 96 wire harness? I could take the harness and splice it into my current one but i don't know if the wiring is similar enough (or if the valves are even similar in operation)

I can see from rockauto listings that my 96 EGR valve is different than the 02 but I can't tell if the pigtails would be different or not, just that they don't mount the same.

oh, will there be any troubles with the rockers clearing the intake? i think since my car is a 96 it will have rollers already....i could probably grab them (and pushrods/lifters) off of the donor car since i'll be in that deep anyway. the guy doesn't seem to mind me robbing whatever random shit i want thusfar, i don't think he'll care about the valvetrain.

if mine aren't rollers already, it will be a decent upgrade.

use the 96 injectors, you can use the newer ones but youll need a tune, all the sensors are the same, you need to use the egr for the 2002 motor, the electrical connections are the same so no splicing or anything just plug it in,

Cool. Thanks.

Are the heads on the 2000+ 3100 superior? If so I could offer him a couple more bucks and take them as well. If they aren't warped or leaking I will use 'em, or I could use them for parts as needed.

rockauto says the intake valves are slightly bigger but i don't know about the runner design

Don't know the condition of the bottom end since there's no fuel system on the car and I can't really run it. I'm going to go pull the intakes and valvetrain this week.

I've got mean valvetrain tick and don't know if it's a lifter, bent pushrod, or rocker that isn't torqued properly. When I do intake gaskets/put the bigger intake on, I'm replacing the lifters with new ones and it wouldn't hurt to have spare pushrods/rockers laying around since I don't know the present condition of my own. And it's $25 for the pile of parts :D

Who knows what else I could pillage from the 2002 3.1?
