imabadczech
OK, so my new old 97 cutlass supreme is one of the nicest cars in my opinion, and I need a little advice. I got my car from my mechanic of 10 years, who got it from a dr who sold it to him due to a bad intake gasket. There was a lot of water in oil but was not run for a long time like that and was towed into the garage. All new intake gaskets and such were done as normal for this 3.1 engine and I have to say, this engine is one of the quietest ever! You can barely hear the car run it is so smooth and quiet. My problem is this. I got her out on the highway for a 25 miles drive yesterday. As I got off the highway, it sounded almost like an exhaust manifold type leak as I could hear the engine more than when it was first started and driven. It isnt a loud banging or anything but you can tell it is a wierd noise. I only hear it when I get on to it like taking off or even reving engine fast a little. Could this noise be the main bearings? It just runs so damn perfect and still idles perfectly with no noise. Would anyone have an idea if I am worrying too much about this or if it is something serious? Thanks y'all for your help Craig in Georgia.

imabadczech
well, i had a mechanic at a dealership look at my car today. He is a good friend. He said the rod bearings are what is making the noise on the car. Aint that a kick in the balls? I guess when intake was shot, all the water that was in the engine did some damage afterall. I should have known. Glad to find out what it is. My friend said with parts, he would remove engine and replace all bearings that need to be replaced for $1k. I cant go wrong with that as he is a very good mechanic.

base93lumina
for the 1K bucks, i would rather just find a low mile 3400 and throw that in there, have a couple extra hp and torque while at it You can find low mile 3400s all day long for around $350 Just my .
