dodgeman
I am taking my car next week to have the timing belt and water pump replaced. I need to know normally what parts have to be purchased for the timing? I dont want to NOT replace something i should and i dont want the guy to stick parts on there to jack the price. I am burning oil at startup and he is replacing the valve stem guides or seals. thanks
emb1230
I've heard that whenever you do the timing belt that you need to also do the Timing pulleys.
Psych0matt
Yep, both idler pulleys, and I'd do the tensioner as well. That's really about it with the Tbelt
dodgeman
thanks for the info, is any one brand of belt better than another?
Psych0matt
I've heard the goodyear gatorback belts are pretty darn good, but I don't know how they compare to others
jman093
I've heard the goodyear gatorback belts are pretty darn good, but I don't know how they compare to others  gatorbacks are serpentine belts, and yeah they work great but they are noisy as hell. My brother has one on his Silverado and the belt sounds like a worn out supercharger.  I've always bought ACDelco belts. Others may be just as good, IDK. As suggested, the pulleys are not a bad idea, although I don't typically change them out if they feel ok. I would definitely change the hydraulic tensioner though. If you need valve stem seals, make sure you do not have dropped exhaust valve guides. I had bad valve stem seal problems and recently found out they were the way they were because 7 out of the 12 exhaust valve guides had dropped. dodgeman
ok, i see belt, pulleys and tensioner, and hydraulic tensioner. the kits i see have 4 pieces. the belt 2 pulleys and a tensioner. is that the same as the hydraulic tensioner? the kits at napa say the hydraulic tensioner is not included in that kit. that sucker is like 250.00 by itself. Psych0matt
well, the pulleys are around $50 each, the tensioner is around $60 IIRC, and the belt is like $40?

I bought my tensioner for $80 from the dealer.
Bake82
I seem to recall the tensioner is a dealer item only. all others can be purchased from any parts store or rockauto.com...
Galaxie500XL
I bought my actuator at the dealer a little over two years ago, cost was around $125.00. And yes, I would make a point of replacing the idler pulleys, the cause of my last belt failure was a faulty pulley bearing, which melted and distorted the pulley (it's plastic), and caused the belt to jump time. Cheap insurance, because this isn't a job you really want to do frequently.
Psych0matt
yes, when mine went it was also because of the pulley. My dad tried to talk me out of replacing the other one that was still good, and I said no way
