runt
So it's about that time to do some work to the Cutty, hopefully before winter, but if not soon after. It's been 23000 since my last ATF change and filter change, and I was just curious, what is going to be the best type of fluid and filter. The car has 97120 miles on it. I don't know what was used last time because they did this for me just before I had bought my car. It's a 96 Cutlass Supreme, by the way. Thanks, Jeremy B.T.W...I have a 4T60, NOT the E, right? Redfox340
B.T.W...I have a 4T60, NOT the E, right? No, you do have the 4T60-E tranny. I used synthetic Mobil 1 ATF and it did me well on my 1992. You should be cautious steping up to a synthetic fluid since sometimes it can promote leaking of seals. How dark is the fluid now? If it's not torched, I bet you could get away with a Torque Flush. - Erik
runt
The fluid isn't fried. It's somewhat brown, just not the normal "pink" color. I am thinking maybe just wait a little while on it and then do it in the spring. Right now I'm so damn buzy that I barely had time to get the damn oil changed in 'er. Alright, so what if I put in some of that Seal Restore (or whatever it's called) maybe a few thousand before I changed, would that help the tranny out? See the deal is, this car HAS to last me a long while. It's my commuter car (which sucks by the way) so I am just trying to figure out how I can get the most life out the the tranny with out having to do a total rebuild, because it would be tough to be with my car. I talked to a mechanic to whom I only trust my car to, and he pretty much told me that the fluid was still OK, but I should think of the Seal Restore (I think he said Sea Foam for trannies if I'm not mistaken) to try 'n help it out. Thanks again Jeremy *Oh, I guess I'm all wet...didn't realize I had the E*
TeeJay3800
I too would recommend Mobil 1 ATF. If you want to save some cash, you could use a semi-synthetic like Valvoline DuraBlend. I am using it right now and have had good luck with it.
Rob95CS
I use the plain, no-brand kind you get from gas stations. I've never had a problem. In my opinion, fluid is fluid.

I would half-ass it with added chemicals and the like. I would get it flush no later than the springs since transmission promblems only complicate themselves. Poor maintenance records with always hurt in the long run. Use whatever fluid you like, I was able to put in sythetic since it was available through work. - Erik
runt
Ok cool. That sounds like a pretty good idea just get fluid. But how much does the Tranny require? Wow...talk about dumb questions. haha

slick
I used the NAPA Performance fluid, it was pretty cheap and it got the job done. Changing the fluid, gasket, and filter is not hard at all. Just did it last sunday actually.
Redfox340
just doing the pan mine needed about 7 qts... Correct. Depending on the service on the tranny, it can take 10 - 14 pints / 5 - 7 quarts. - Erik
