bluebirdvision Posted December 22, 2011 Report Posted December 22, 2011 Stock AM/FM/Cass/CD NON Monsoon Concert Sound II Delco Radio. Awesome sounding stereo, I was just wondering if it was possible to purchase replacement speakers from a store like Wal*Mart and if anyone knew what the specs on the speakers are. The passenger side, and drivers side speakers are blown. Quote
2k2cse Posted December 22, 2011 Report Posted December 22, 2011 The doors have components..6.5" I think. I have the same system, and was thinking about doing the same..get some cheap 2 ways from wal mart to replace them. Quote
bluebirdvision Posted December 22, 2011 Author Report Posted December 22, 2011 Would something like this work? Would it fit in my door panel? http://www.walmart.com/ip/Kenwood-6.5-2-Way-160W-Speaker-System-KFC-1652/16451452 I've got some buses at work with these speakers installed, and they sound great for the price. 2k2cse Posted December 22, 2011 Report Posted December 22, 2011 I wouldn't go that cheap on speakers. But yes, they should fit. I know a guy who has these in his century and find them great. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sony-Xplod-XS-R1644-6-1-2-4-Way-Speakers/14956456 They're not real expensive either. I'd say its worth the extra few bucks. Quote
oldsfever Posted December 22, 2011 Report Posted December 22, 2011 I put a pair of those in my Cutlass and they sound great. A little distortion when it's full volume but I don't play it that loud anyway. Quote
xtremerevolution Posted December 22, 2011 Report Posted December 22, 2011 (edited) I don't know what the Century runs, but I do know the Regals (my 1995 and my 2000) run a 5.25" component set. Might want to double check what size you have before you buy speakers. I'd take the Kenwoods over the Sonys any day. The Sony Xplod line is very possibly the absolute worst in car audio you can buy. Its not even funny how bad that crap is. Don't spend too much on speakers that have a higher power handling. Edited December 22, 2011 by xtremerevolution Quote
chadz34 Posted December 22, 2011 Report Posted December 22, 2011 Go to get some Sony speakers, they're cheap, have a good warranty and don't sound half bad. Quote
xtremerevolution Posted December 22, 2011 Report Posted December 22, 2011 Go to get some Sony speakers, they're cheap, have a good warranty and don't sound half bad. I don't think I'd go quite that cheap. Quote

chadz34 Posted December 22, 2011 Report Posted December 22, 2011 Mind explaining? I just always loved my Sony 6x9's from good old Canadian Tire. He was looking for a stockish replacement, and these Sony's would blow them away. Like I said, cheap, good warranty, decent sound for the money. As a buyer of such speakers I give them a thumbs up. I think it's funny how good the price! Quote
chadz34 Posted December 22, 2011 Report Posted December 22, 2011 He even said a store like Walmart! Quote

I think it's funny how good the price! Nothing wrong with walmart. You can get a midgrade Pioneer head unit at walmart; same model you can get elsewhere. The fact that you can buy it at walmart has nothing to do with it. Sony Xplod products are as a whole crap. Their subs are crap, their speakers are crap, and their head units are semi-crap. Their amplifiers are a whole new definition of crap, and what's worse is that they don't sell for crap prices. They're overpriced for what you get. $47 for a plastic speaker? really? They're labeled as Polyolefin. You know what else is made of Polyolefin? Dishwasher safe food containers; tupperware/glad containers, etc. They're advertised as having "piezo dome" tweeters. They're not piezo tweeters. Google the term if you're not sure. "A piezo (or piezo-electric) tweeter contains a piezoelectric crystal coupled to a mechanical diaphragm." These are plastic or thin metal dome tweeters, which generally sound harsh and flat out bad. Lastly, foam surrounds. Really? No speaker surround degrades faster in automotive environments exposed to summer sun and temperature changes than light, porous foam. Rubberized foam would be significantly more durable. If I wanted something cheap and crappy, I'd buy something like this and have the same end result: http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_25196_SoundStorm_GS260S.aspx http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_24363_Pyle_PL63BL.aspx Actually, scratch that, I think the above speakers are better. The Pyle speakers even have a rubber surround. For a price similar to those sony 6.5" drivers listed, you could buy the following superior products: http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_29800_MTX_TN653.aspx http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_19077_Pioneer_TS-G1642R.aspx http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_21403_Rockford_Fosgate_R1653.aspx http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_29687_Massive_Audio_VX_6.aspx The Massive Audio coaxials for example are worlds above the Sony ones listed earlier for $2 more. Much bigger motor structure (meaning, they will get louder and stay distortion-free), a proper silk dome tweeter, and better materials all around. Edited December 22, 2011 by xtremerevolution Quote

bluebirdvision Posted January 13, 2012 Author Report Posted January 13, 2012 I ended up buying speakers from Kicker. They are good speakers, but I don't like that the tweeter is integrated into the speaker, and there so no way to hook up the factory tweeters that are further up the door. Thanks for the help Quote

Thanks for the help If by good you mean they produce sound, then yeah, they're usually made of quality materials. I hope you didn't pay a whole lot for them though. They can get loud, but don't sound very good at any volume. Anthony on here also tried them out in his install and insisted that they would sound great. A month later he couldn't stand how crappy they sounded and ended up swapping them out for something else. I forget if he went with boston, polk, or infinity. Either way, its better than having a blown speaker. Wiring should have been simple though. You should be able to replace the door speaker and keep the tweeters operating just as they did before. bluebirdvision Posted January 13, 2012 Author Report Posted January 13, 2012 I believe the tweeters were hooked to the speakers and the replacements didn't have a provision for doing that. Quote
