Z34guy Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 (edited) As we all know, I'm an LQ1 humper. So I was ecstatic when I saw THIS come into our school's shop. We're doing the rear main seal and timing belt. The car is rust free underneath and needs a bit of odds and ends work. Fortunately, the woman who owns it loves the car and is in the process of having it restored. And I know someone here likes keeping track of these... And the results of the past 2 school shop days: Edited December 10, 2011 by Z34guy Quote
95cutlass Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 Very nice. The body looks to be in really nice condition and is clean. The top on the other hand needs to be replaced. Do you know how many miles are on it? Quote
GOT2B GM Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 Cool , nice looking vert. You sure its the rear main leaking and not the dist o-ring? Thing needs a top, she's shrunk up quite a bit. Quote
Z34guy Posted December 10, 2011 Author Report Posted December 10, 2011 I believe it's around 107,000 miles. The entire engine's being gone over so if it's not the rear main seal, we'll find it before the car leaves. The owner of this car has no problem with however long it takes, so long as it's done right... God I'd love to have this car. XD Quote
94 olds vert Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 I thought I had a rear main leak on mine turned out to be th oil pump o ring. That is a very clean car. That top could be replaced. Quote
chadz34 Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 Very sharp color, tell the rest of the shop not to touch the paint lol. Quote
jeremy Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 ...I thought you said that your automotive teacher won't let you work on LQ1s and called them "ABOMINATIONS" ..... Quote
Z34guy Posted December 10, 2011 Author Report Posted December 10, 2011 He wouldn't let me work on MINE. This is the car of a PAYING CUSTOMER. He still calls it an abomination and thinks the owner insane for wanting to restore it. Quote
Andrew Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 :saving that pic for the next noob that needs to clean his EGR tube: Quote
Z34guy Posted December 12, 2011 Author Report Posted December 12, 2011 Well, we only get the shop every other day. Today was mainly about getting the engine unmounted from the subframe and removed, and bolting the subframe back into the car, transmission still attached. Quote
White93z34 Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 fairly recent trans overhaul? yeah if they are going after a rear main seal to cure the oil leak they are gona be in for a surprise when its the oil pump drive seal that is causing it. Quote

Haha, was thinking the same exact thing. A lot of work for that oil pump drive seal. Quote
94 olds vert Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 I bet there easier to replace with the engine out of the car. Quote
Crazy K Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 not really, I have done both ways... Quote
Z34guy Posted December 13, 2011 Author Report Posted December 13, 2011 if you insist If I recall, LQ1's were known for blowing tranny's. Quote
95cutlass Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 How in the hell is the LQ1s an abominations. I think the teacher is lol Quote
Psych0matt Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 How in the hell is the LQ1s an abominations. I think the teacher is lol They are pretty retarded engines... I'm not saying I don't love them. Quote
95cutlass Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 They are pretty retarded engines... I'm not saying I don't love them. I love them anyway. People should take care of them better and maybe they would not have so many problems. Doubtful though lol. Speaking of the LQ1's, I need to get my oil leak fixed on mine:lol: Quote
Z34guy Posted December 13, 2011 Author Report Posted December 13, 2011 How in the hell is the LQ1s an abominations. I think the teacher is lol My teacher once argued with me over it. In the middle of the argument, he said the LQ1 was crap. I pointed behind him to a 2200 Corsica on a lift and said "No. THAT'S crap." He replied "No. That's a workhorse." I just stared at him like he was on crack. Quote
alec_b Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 Well he has a point... a 2.2 is much more accepting of abuse than an LQ1. MUCH more accepting. Don't get abuse and fun mixed up, the LQ1 has been proven that it can handle a beating, just not neglect. I neglected the shit out of my '94 cavalier and that car would not die. Quote
GOT2B GM Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 LQ1's will go a long time as long as its gets oil changes and timing belts Quote

My LQ1 originally went 40,000 miles without so much as an oil change. What killed it was an unrelated timing issue. Quote
Euro Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 40,000 miles without an oil change isn't something to brag about. That's just stupid. Quote
