TTThornhill
Hello All, ran into an Odd problem that just happened. on my 1998 GT,(3.8 180k miles) I performed the following things at service oil & filter change (went from 5w-30 to 10w-30) replaced pcv valve seafoam treatment of valves and crankcase after I did the following I have noticed that upon startup, the car will puff some white smoke that has a fuelish smell to it. then it goes right away and doesnt happen til the car cuts off and sits for a while. everything drives just as good as before and there are no codes on dash. The car never had any smoke issues until i performed this service. Also, I am having some kind of screeching sound that happens randomly. I think i might of gotten some oil on the manifold then it got slung onto some of the pulleys. it sounds like it was coming from the compressor area. but not to sure yet. It will only happen around 800 - 1500rpm and when going slow. I pressure washed that area off and it went away, but came back the next day. I doesnt sound like a typical belt squeal, almost sounds like metal on metal. I know this would be hard to get any help on, but i just wanted to throw that in there. any help will be appreciated! 94 olds vert
If you put sea-foam in your car, it's going to smoke.
TTThornhill
this is 2 days after the fact and over 100 miles of driving.
94 olds vert
Did you put it in the crank case?
TTThornhill
yup and only had it in there for about 10 minutes of driving before i changed the oil
94 olds vert
Then the seafoam is not the problem.
ScoobyDoo82
Then the seafoam is not the problem. I'm pretty sure he knew this. How severe does the smoking get, just little puffs or is it plumes? As for the grinding/scraping it might be your water pump or compressor starting to take a poop. I doubt anything you did caused this, its probably just timing.
Mel87
Need more detail on the smoke coming out to be able to try to diagnose it. As for the screeching, that could be number of things as well. Dry belt, bad AC compressor bearings, or even the pulley going bad.
TTThornhill
i guess you could consider it a small plume. it will do it just for about 10 seconds then stop. its kinda like the seafoam effect but just very short. the cloud will travel all the way from front yard to back. brake
can you pressure test the cooling system?
TTThornhill
yea ill try to get my hands on a tester in the next couple of days. I did replace just my upper intake gasket about 3 months ago. but I have not noticed any loss of coolant recently.
brake
yeah i'd pressure test it and probably check the fuel pressure as well.
TTThornhill
well here is an update so far. it is nothing on the pulleys. I took off the belt for a second and it still squealed. when running, I removed the oil cap (which seem to had a good bit of suction, everyone at my shop says that it more than normal) and the sound will go away, but the cap on and 2 seconds later is starts right back up. I purchased another PCV valve and it still does the same thing. I still have not been able to get my hands on a pressure tester ( i work at a diesel shop and everythings is a little big)
Andrew
Heavy white smoke is usually an indication of burning coolant. i would inspect the upper plenum around the egr port, super common to fail there. Should replace it with the improved design and smaller stovepipe no matter what.
TTThornhill
problem solved, found that i was missing an Oring on the PCV valve itself. without it, it was causing high crankcase pressure resulting in the odd squeal.
