HP gain from catalyst removal??

How much HP/torque do you guys think is gained when you remove the catalytic converter? I have a Flowmaster which I hear you only get about a 5% increase from. So, how much is gained with having no cat?

I don't think removing the cat nets more than a few ponies at most in ideal conditions, you will however gain a great deal more sound as the 3.1's are loud V6's. 8)

Yeah for sure. Mine with the Flowmaster was already loud, but when I replaced the cat with a 2.5" straight pipe, it doubled in volume and still sounds tuned.

so you have one 40series and nothing else? I'd like to hear it if you have any means of recording it...use a cell phone w/ the sound recording function and then hold it to a mic on your computer or something...lol  ..I have a 30series on my 93 w/ nothing else besides 2.5'' mandrel bent piping in the stock fashion(the factory "dual exhaust" as they put it on the window sticker...I'm going to sue for false advertisement...lmao)

ah fah shiz! w3rd up 'yo those mad fart tips shount be unda-estimat3d!!!

but seriously, i never dyno'd my 3.1 MPFI engine before & after i put the test pipe in, which was installed at around 205,xxx miles (completely welded in). it got a little louder but i actually liked it since the car was so damn quiet before i had a hard time knowing when to shift without looking at the tach. it still has a regular single factory exhaust and i have no idea what muffler is on it (still has whatever i bought the car with when it had 111,xxx miles on it....it's up to 213,xxx now & it still runs great. i could DEFINATELY feel a performance gain using the 'butt-dyno' :) not just on the Interstate (where it REALLY helped the most - the test pipe really helped passing power), but i didn't seem to lose any low or midrange power either. thankfully i live in WY and don't have to worry about any silly emission laws :) we DO have extremely thin high altitude air instead (7200ft. ). my cat converter was starting to stink pretty bad ecspecially when doing a quick Interstate 0-80mph and then coming to a stop. the problem was getting bad enough that i thought it might be a fire hazard if i kept driving it that way. i would have rather gotten a hi-flow Walker cat but i can't afford that :nono: besides the CS should have a completely new 2.5" or 3" complete mandrel bent exhaust system from the TGP downpipe on back (with fake dual tips of course) after i get my TGP motor in there (like in the year 2048 lol).

just my .02

Do you think the HP gain would be more on a TGP??? I've been thinking of removing the cat from the TGP and was wondering if it would make much of a difference. The cat is only a few weeks old, but I would still think no cat would be better, correct?

It should be a lot more on a TGP

Uh... that doesn't make a whole lotta sense, why would a cat get more hp than no cat at all?

That time for your TGP seems pretty slow considering the Jeff M chip. Just wondering what your altitude is up there, or if the car is running good. That time is about what stock was, thats why Im curious

The Jeff M. chip had been in the car for about 15 hours when I ran that time...I am pretty sure it had a LOT more learning to do for it to run quicker. The car seems much quicker now that it has been a few days. But according to Jeff M's site, he says not to expect much more than that from them anyways because of how much the times vary. Also, the crossover could have a lot to do with it. The car is basically completely stock besides the Jeff M chip and the required intake and t-stat, it has the stock cracked crossover and all. I am putting in new plugs and a few other things in the next few weeks, and also removing the cat to see how much that helps, but thats about it for future mods in the near future. The stock crossover has to be what is hurting it...it doesn't have enough power to break the tires loose...all it can do is chirp them a bit...that is where it is lacking. But that did help run consistant at the track because I could just nail the gas off the line instead of feathering it, and I pulled 2.2 60's all day long! I don't know what the altitude is, but it is pretty low, like a couple hundred feet maybe...the altitude is not the problem.

I didn't know that those chips needed time to "learn" to make the car quick. I assume by Jeff M. you are talking about the FFP stuff. I've been considering getting one of his chips and the UDP. Not sure how much gain I will see since everything else is stock. BTW, if you're in Holt, you are probably right, not more than a few hundred feet I wouldn't think.

It's all about backpressure and engine breathing. Too much backpressure could caused burnt valves or pistons, especially on a turbo or supercharged car. Not enough backpressure and horsepower will be lost.

It's a lot like a good air filter. a K&N filter will flow more CFM than no filter at all because it smooths out the turbulance in the airflow. A tuned exhaust will do the same thing. You don't want to eliminate backpressure altogether, but it will help to reduce it, especially on a turbo engine.

how do those carsound cats you find on ebay for like 35 bucks compair to stock? and how would it sound/perform teamed up with a 40 series flowmaster?

No, I am talking about Jeff M. He is a moderator on this forum, and he makes the chips himself. They are just for the Turbo 3.1's (TGP & STE). I am pretty sure FFP doesn't sell any chips for the Turbo 3.1.
