AMP
so my GTP came with the cone filter when i got it, i was just wandering if it is better to have the cone or the stock box and filter.
94 olds vert
Well, if you mean put a true CAI on it and get rid of the stock air box. Then the true CAI would be the better bet.
Mater
on the 97+ supercharged cars a box does not do much do the heat soaking of the M90. a cone on the end of the TB is just as effective as a full box. unless you do a fender wheel intake where the filter is in the fender wheel but event hen the M90 heats up the air so much it is nill gains
Mel87
I prefer cone filters, CAI or just a plain cone. They are easier to get to, you can always see how dirty they are without having to take the box apart, and a lot of cone filters are washable. I had a Spectre cone filter on my previous Cutlass and I had it rest inside the stock box with the lid off, it made cool sounds when I stepped on the gas:dance:
urbex
I was under the impression you get one of those cheap cone filters from Auto Zone if you want to just rice your car up.

jake91
the main advantage of a wai intake (cone filter instead of a box) is increased throttle responce as the air doesnt have to travel as far. there is no real power gain 2hp at most. a cai will give you cooler air thus more power but nowhere more than 5hp unless you have other supporting mods and the car needs to breath better. cai>wai>stock
urbex
Personally I would say a CAI would be your best bet. Why don't car manufacturers put the air filter on top of the engine with no ducting to bring the air from anywhere other than around the engine (like in the old cars). Also, why are more and more new cars drawing the air from the wheel wells essentially coming from the factory with CAIs? The engineers who design new cars do lots of studying
skitchin
The stock box filter really didn't have that bad of a design on my grand prix - perhaps it didn't have the best airflow, but the air was routed from behind the headlights, vs my cone filter which sucks air from the engine bay. Also, stock intake housing has a resonator, which they say actually raises horsepower, raises MPG, and reduces noise.
Mater
the IATs with a CAI (box) and a WAI (cone on TB) are the same when the car is moving only when it is sitting in traffic does it get hotter with the cone on TB. and the temps go back down after 25 seconds on a really hot day. on my car all the temps stayed at around 79* on a 90* day when moving at 30-50mph. stopped no box got up to 120* with box it got up to 92* on the IAT PID i will stick with the open cone the 2hp (if that) gained from a box is not even noticeable and most dynos have a variance of 5hp any way so it is hard to verify the increase
AMP
ok well i know that the fender inners have been removed kinda, you can see the tire anyway and the cone is kinda facing it. so it could be some what of a help but i dont know. skitchin
Got an itch to try making something after reading this thread. Thoughts? I found the top of my air filter box the other day. I've been needing to make a better heat shield for a long time so after a bit of fooling around and lots of cutting here's what I came up with... Ignore the meltyness from dremeling The hose used to connect to the back, but that was now connected to my cone filter so the hole acts as a big duct. I hacked up some electrical connectors as mounts so I could put the box on backwards to draw air from the front. I also had to cut a large corner near the duct in order to clear the cone filter. I started looking at an 80mm computer fan and couldn't help but notice it was exactly the size of the opening. I rounded off the corners on one side of the fan and low and behold. The little plastic tabs even slot up o_O, that's even weirder. It's a very snug fit and almost definitely wouldn't need anything else to keep it in place. I haven't actually bothered running it with the fan yet, no idea what it'd do tbh but it might be worth a trial run for kicks. Addicted to eaton
i see alot of fail here. CAI on the way.... Not on is it louder when it right behind the fog light (where mine was) it gets alot of cooler air.. even driving down the road.. the heat off the cross over is still there with a WAI... Now here is what i have learned Mild to stock l67 is pretty nice with a CAI.. But when you get into the small pulleys.. it really makes no diffrence.. LEAVE the cone either way..On the tb or on the fender.. Or you will miss the whine.. lol
