trans suddenly won't move car?

Something strange happened this morning. I started my car (92gs 3.8). It ran fine, but when I put it in reverse, it didn't back up. Same thing for all gears. Trans is full of fluid. It worked perfectly 2 days ago. I park on a slight uphill grade. Just enough that the car will move some in neutral. With the car in neutral, foot off of brake rolling back slightly, I pulled lever into D and I could feel it engage and the roll back slowed down some but it couldn't go forward. Anyone ever experience this?

Does the pump whine? Any new whining noises being made? The trans in my 92 GTP just took a huge shit out of the blue. we 5spd swapped it. Not saying it's done but be prepared for the worst:(

I have posted about my 94 gs and a freind with a 94 lumina acting like it was in neatral for a few seconds. Only happens on colder days on initial pull off. FTM, mine hasnt done it in along while. Anyway, if it is like this, ive heard it may be a cooling line drainback valve , when it malfunctions, the conv will loose fluid charge and thats where the slip occurs. This wont hurt a thing...IF this is your problem. I havent even worried about putting on a new valve. I hope its not your pump, etc. If you lost all gears, it sounds like pump. If it is, fluid will be too hi on dipstick/no fluid will flow thru cooler. Check that

Thanks for the replies. I tried the car again yesterday evening and it still wouldn't move in any gears. Then I put it down into 1st again and it moved like normal. I tried all forward gears and reverse. All ok now. I moved it into my garage and will change trans fluid and filter this weekend. I will check for that drain back valve as well. Thanks thikstik. I had not heard of those before.

Well, I changed the fluid and filter today. The old oil didn't look bad at all. And no particles in the pan. Just some fine, gray particles on the magnet. As I was letting the trans warm up to check level, I could hear a strange noise from the transmission area. It sounded sot of like an alternator with a bad bearing. Or a power steering pump low on oil. The pitch would change when I revd the engine. Pump maybe? The car works in all gears but I don't want to put it on the road until I know the problem is solved.
