direct drop-in motor

Are all 3100 and 3400 (ohv) motors a direct replacement for the 3100 in my 96 Grand Prix SE? Or only certain years/models/platforms? Impalas and Montana vans are everywhere.

It knocks like a Jehovah and it hasn't sprung an intake manifold gasket yet at 254k kilometers...I'm waiting for it.

It would be much easier for me to get a used motor and do all of the gaskets while it's on a stand and then just swap it in, assuming everything would be a direct fit and I wouldn't need to buy anything aside from new motor mounts.

I found a '95 3100 with transmission (out of an Oldsmobile) for $200. Mileage is much lower than mine. Is that a direct fit?

Ha ha...knocks like a Jehovah... That's funny!!!

it runs decently enough but it's the loudest piston slap i've heard on a motor that actually functions. i don't want to do the top end gaskets on a motor with a shitty bottom end :D

thanks guys! any other bits of advice would be greatly appreciated.

The plot thickens. I was offered a complete van w/ a 3400 in it that has recently (10k ago) had the top end rebuilt with new gaskets and had the heads reconditioned/acid dipped/magnafluxed. 400 bucks for the whole van, it's a 98 venture. going to see if he'll sell me the motor by itself because i really don't have a spot for the van...my vic and grand prix take up the driveway.

if you get the whole van though you could re-coupe almost all the money just from scrapping it

pulling a engine from a U-body is pretty tough it has to be dropped out the bottom unless you get a little ambitious with a saws-all

it was not fun when i had to replace the engine in my old race wagon (said in a german accent) 2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette GLS

it had 3500 heads/LIM and ported 3400 intake

hmm, good to know. I don't even really have room for the van itself so needing to drop it out of the bottom would make this almost impossible.

I am always up for a challenge but I don't think I have the necessary gear for this kind of thing.

I can hook you up with a new GM crate 3.1 LG8 V6 but it's probably a bit costly for ya. Got $2,150? ;)

I don't know that anyone would pay that insane amount of money for a 20 year old slow (albeit reliable) engine

LG8 was introduced in 2000, so it's only 11 years old!

The one I'm talking about is a 2003 model (with the LG8 GM did tons of yearly updates between each year to improve the engine, 2003 and 2005 were big upgrade years). So it's only almost 8 years old. But it's a new turn key crate with 0 miles so the price kinda explains itself (its cheaper when compared to what they originally went for a few years back) It's not that bad a price if you want a newer/recent engine that will easily go 250,000+ miles with proper maintenance. Never been a fan of junkyard/used pulled motors honestly, rather buy something rebuilt or new - it's worth the money sometimes (like if you put a bunch of money into the car and plan on keeping it for years, buy new else just get a used one with lowish miles).

I'm realizing how easy it would be to just hack the front end off of the van and pull the motor straight out. If I can find a place to keep the van for a few days I'll do it.
