urbex
Quick question.... When I changed my pads and rotors I noticed the driver.side was worse and worn more than the passenger side. When I took the hubcap off the other day I noticed there was a lot more dust on that one than the passenger side. Is that an indication the caliper may be sticking? Reason I ask is I have a coupon for auto zone that expires tommorrow...and a caliper would only cost me $10. So the only reason I'd be getting it would be because it's cheap and if I need to get one soon I'd rather not the coupon go to waste.... But I didn't even know if that's a sign of one even going bad or not? Forgive my grammar and spelling I'm on my phone at school....lol
xennith
I'm no expert, but in my experience, yes.
urbex
Well I know a way to test is to brake without touching the steering wheel and see which way the car pulls, only problem is the car needs an alignment so I can't really go by that.... Another question... Do they need to be replaced in pairs? Or can you just replace one?
Schurkey
You "can" replace just one. Since replacing a caliper involves opening the hydraulic system, which means bleeding the brakes afterward (good idea anyway, gets rid of the old, contaminated brake fluid--just keep bleeding until the fluid comes out bluish-clear instead of brownish) you might as well do both...or all four. It's not like the calipers cost much; really the investment is in labor and brake fluid. Check the brake hoses while you're in there, reasonable chance they're deteriorated too. If the rubber cover on the hose is damaged...stick a fork in 'em, they're done.
BXX
Odds are, the brake hose is internally collapsing as well. Age is rough on them. That will leak to the caliper hanging a bit and giving you the wear. I would vote for 2 new front calipers and brake hoses. Hoses are like $30 for both these days IIRC and cheap insurance. urbex
Ok thanks. I'm thinking now might be the best time to replace them all anyways since I just replaced the pads/rotors a few months ago as well. Since it's got 160k on it and 13 years it can't hurt! Thanks again!
