7purdy Posted October 17, 2011 Report Posted October 17, 2011 Just got a '95 regal with the 3100 in it. Car runs great until around 4200 RPM then acts as if its hitting the rev limiter. It does this free revving and under load of driving. Any suggestions? Also would like to know if it is possible to remove the AC pump and if so what is the new belt part number. Thanks Quote
Mel87 Posted October 17, 2011 Report Posted October 17, 2011 These cars do have rev limiters, so that is whats happening. Although I had a 95 Cutlass, 3.1 and if you play with the gas you can get it past the limiter. Maybe mine was going bad who knows. Quote
tornado_735 Posted October 17, 2011 Report Posted October 17, 2011 You do have a 4k RPM rev limiter while in park or neutral (and not moving) but it should definitely not feel like that while driving. Not sure what the cause of that would be. And it is possible to remove the AC pump, but AFAIK you can only replace it with a bypass pulley. Quote
95 vert Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Could be the PCM "thinks" it's in neutral all the time. You need to check and see if when it's in drive, it shows on a scan tool that it is. I've also found that aftermarket alarms can cause this since they're usually tied into the yellow start wire from the ignition switch to the trans switch/neutral safety switch mounted on the trans. White93z34 Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 It sounds like the trans range switch is thinking the car is in park when driving. However I've also seen a bad ICM do the same thing. Quote
white4d96 Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 IIRC the limiter is somehow tied into the VSS, as if you put the car in neutral while going over a certain speed it will rev all the way to the regular limiter. Quote
White93z34 Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Good point, I forgot about that. In that case I'd say its most likely a bad icm. Quote
7purdy Posted October 19, 2011 Author Report Posted October 19, 2011 Thanks everyone, I will do some more investigating this weekend with my new W-body education. Quote
