3pt1lumina
My dad's 95 Brickyard Monte has the infamous 3.4 and I have been chasing an issue all summer, and I'm officially out of ideas. Some back story. Has 86k on it, before we got it the previous owner only put 1500 miles on it in 5 years. Since May, my dad's put on about 3k. When we first got it when you would take off it would have a bad stumble then go. Idle was kind of funny, especially cold. So I replaced the TPS and the stumble went away but the car still idled funny when cold. So I cleaned the IAC, no difference. Replaced it, ran worse. Put the old one back in, runs about the same as before. I've checked for vacuum leaks, the PCV line was so so replaced that and the PCV, still no difference. When the car is cold, it runs terrible. It will tach up to about 3k and slowly come down, with a terrible idle. If you drive it for about 2 mins and come to a stop it will run like it's going to stall. Drive it a bit more and get it warmed up, runs fine. One other thing I notice, when you are in park and go to tap the gas (like revv it up a little) it takes a long time (15-20 seconds) for the idle to come back down to 900 or so. HELP! I want to get this resolved before we store it for the winter. I honestly have no idea if the plugs/wires have been done. The front wires are red, backs are gray, Belden wires are what's on there...don't think those were OEM. Thanks in advance!
95 vert
Man, sounds like the intake gasket is leaking. Same issue I had with one of mine.
urbex
Contrary to what I have done, I'd start with the cheaper items first and work from there. I'd look at plugs/wires first. Maybe coil packs too?
nitehawkjcb
Check your fuel pressure. Filter might be clogged, or the pump could be weak. Couldn't hurt to change the spark plugs and wires.
AL
Man, sounds like the intake gasket is leaking. Same issue I had with one of mine. I agree, Buck had the same issue with my old
Addicted to eaton
I agree, Buck had the same issue with my old 91 was about to say the same thing. Sounds like its getting air its not accounting for (just like my impala was)
White93z34
those are napa wires. It sounds kind of like an intake gasket leak to me if its idling that high when cold. check your booster hose as well.
3pt1lumina
You know... I never thought of the intake gaskets. How hard are they to do on this engine? I think it will need plugs/wires anyways as that was something we were going to do, as well as a Timing Belt in the spring (since I don't know how old it is). Chances are what I'll do is maybe do it all at once. Finding a few little gremlins from it sitting so long. That's why I drive the hell out of whatever I have! Schurkey
Put a scan tool on this thing (a REAL tool, not some cheap-junk code reader) and look for issues. Does the coolant temp sensor provide accurate data? What is the short- and long-term fuel correction when the engine is idling bad? O2 sensor seem to provide valid data? Crazy K
Your symptoms definitely sound like a bad intake gasket. i have had the same issue with a 95 LQ1 and the intake gasket fixed it. You can try the spray carb cleaner trick to see if it will isolate the gasket leak....
New Age Monte
An update.....The engine has developed a slight coolant leak from what appears to be the front of the engine. Could be a gasket.

Assuming it's an intake gasket, would it be easier to replace the timing belt at the same time (to save on labor)?
BrianK82
Replacing the lower intake manifold gaskets has no bearing on the timing belt. Two completely separate procedures.
GEN1Z34
Before you throw parts @ it I would locate and correct the coolant leak.. Then have the timing belt changed since it should have been done @ 60K especially if you're still running the original belt and if you're hard on it.. No offense but I would have a professional change the belt as it does'nt seem like you're overly familier with the LQ1.. After the belt is changed, if symtoms persist, I would do as mentioned and have it scanned with the proper scan tool.. Most auto parts stores such as Advance will scan it for free.. Simply throwing parts @ it is never really a good idea.. Just my .
