Nick1233
So my 'trigue seems to be getting lower mpg lately, and I can't figure out why. I have kept it regularly maintained and run some form of fuel system cleaner through it every other tank or so, and I don't have any other trouble with it. Any ideas on why? Thanks in advance Nick
Andrew
could be any number of things. dirty air filter, dirty throttle body, dirty MAF, o2 sensor, fuel filter, cheap gas, tires are low, heavy foot.......
Nick1233
I suppose I should have listed that stuff too. Within the past 200mi I have cleaned the air filter (K&N, so re-oil and everything), cleaned the TB, cleaned the MAF, aired up tires, etc. I do need to check the fuel filter though, I'll try that. Galaxie500XL
How many miles on the car? Last time mine began dropping suddenly, without apparent cause, the O2 sensor was dying...had about 50,000 miles on it. It wasn't setting a check engine light--yet. Replaced the O2 sensor, and things went back to normal.
urbex
Where do you live? It's about that time of year that the winter blended fuel will be used in the north. (Which contains more ethanol)
Nick1233
Yeah could be the ethanol, I'm up in Wisconsin. I didn't even think of that. And as for the mileage, I'm at 134k but not throwing any codes or having any symptoms of trouble.
slick
What was mpg before vs now? You can usually expect anywhere from 2-5mpg drop with winter gas. Anything more, you have got another issue.
thikstik
I believe the gov passed a new 15% standard. We live in hellish times thanks to stupid people.
Nick1233
Yeah 2-5 sounds right, I got an avg of about 3mpg less one tank and 5 less for another. Two different gas stations too so I'll probably stick with the one that was only a 3mpg loss haha.
slick
Choose one station, do several fill-ups and track it. If it seems to be getting worse with similar driving conditions (keep in mind colder weather will drop mpg's too), you need to look into some other issue. 19Cutlass94
I would also expect the gas companies have put out the "winter blend" for us up north. That will contribute to the loss in mpg, from the shit they put in it...
Nick1233
Damn gas companies and their "winter" gas. Drop the price if it's gonna drop mpg and be full of crap.
urbex
Actually the winter blend is cheaper
Nick1233
^ my bad, switched summer with winter blends. Still, it's not really technically "cheaper" when you lose mpg. You just end up having to buy more gas for the same distances.
urbex
No it's not, and when you figure how much mpgs you lose, it doesn't even go down enough to cover it. IIRC it's like 10 or 15 cents is all, but I could be wrong.
virtuetovice
That 15 cents or so adds up when you're driving 100 miles a day.
urbex
Yeah it does, I didn't mean that it isn't. I just meant that I don't believe the 15 cents per gallon is enough to offset the mpg lost. I could be wrong though.

Nick1233
Well say you get 20 mpg and your'e driving 100mi, that's 5 gal. Lose 5mpg and you're up to a little under 7gal for that same 100mi. Even dropping the price .20 a gal wouldn't offset the difference. chadz34
Whats the difference between gasoline....and ''winter'' gas? I might have missed something?
urbex
They put different additives in it. Not sure exactly what all goes in, but I do know that they put more ethanol in. Ethanol=lower gas mileage
chadz34
Ethanol = bad for engines...AFAIK.
thikstik
I know that winter blend is more volatile so it will light off easier for a cold start. Blame the EPA...not oil producers. Wer'e not dying of asthma. Were dying from hi taxes/over regulation.
