regalman
I changed battery last week and read that I had to do the idle learn procedure. 3800 motor would stumble a little when cold but accelerates fine without a miss. I notice now when starting cold engine idles about 1110 RPM but drops to normal idle after a couple of minutes. Before changing battery when car started it was immediately at normal idle about 650 RPM and didnt stumble at all. After the relearn car starts quicker when cold but still idles high for a short while, is this normal? should it idle a little higher when cold?. I did the following relearn procedure. Clean the throttle body, restart the car and let it idle for a minute to stabilize. Turn the car and all accessories off and disconnect the battery for about 5 minutes. • Restore battery power and turn off air conditioning controls. • Run the engine up to operating temperature and shut off. • Apply the parking brake. Start the vehicle and place it in drive (A/T), or neutral (manual). • Run the engine until the cooling fan has cycled on and off, or for a maximum of 10 minutes. • Turn the ignition key off for at least 5 seconds. • Restart the engine and again shift into drive or neutral. Allow engine to run for at least 5 minutes. • Shut off engine for 10 seconds and restart. Does this sound correct, I cleaned the MAF and the throttle body too. Galaxie500XL
I can't say definitely this is your problem, but it is something to consider. Many years ago, I had a Grand Am..battery died, went to Wal-Mart, and bought a battery. Had weird idle and drivability issues immediately after replacing the battery. The problem turned out in my case to be a crummy NEW battery--the battery wasn't accepting a charge like it should, and voltages were all over the place, which is a problem, considering most of the sensors on the car, and the ECM is relying on a reference voltage in order to operate properly. Made them replace the battery, which eliminated the weird idle and drive problems---problem almost solved. The problem was COMPLETELY solved, once I promised myself NEVER to buy a Wal-Mart battery again.
