Psych0matt
So I'm thinking the power steering line on the passenger side needs replacing, since I can successfully drain a bottles worth of fluid in about 15 minutes from right behind the passenger wheel. It doesn't seem to be the rear high pressure hose, so I assume it's the line that drops from the pump to that side. I've heard this is a pain... True? and what all needs to be done? (hints, tricks, suggestions?) EDIT: This is on the GTP Edited September 21, 2011 by Psych0matt
alec_b
Far as I know the pressure line is one piece from the pump to the line. Rockauto only shows one line for the pressure side, AC Delco #19147748. It's not usually that bad to replace, but messy and time consuming. Usually dropping the rear of the subframe helps. GOT2B GM
This should be TOO bad of a job with the 284. Auto's are a bitch.
White93z34
it sounds like a pressure line to me. Does it leak more when you are turning the wheel? Both hi and lwo pressure PS lines run through that same area. So you may want to get the car in the air and take a look at it. Hi side line should not be all that terrible on a 5 speed, automatics are a total bitch though. if its the low pressure line and you want to do it right and replace the whole line that sucks plain and simple. I know lots of people will rubber hose the rusted out section of line and frankly i cannot blame them for that since you can get away with it on the low pressure side. ptcfast2
The real sucky part is getting to the nut on the rack! When I did my hoses I replaced the rack as well (found a nice supplier in Detroit that sells top notch re-manufactured w-body racks for about $85). I made sure to tighten that nut down pretty dang hard when I had the rack out - I didn't want to tighten it later when it was on the car. Psych0matt
Yeah, I may have to find somewhere with a lift that I can get my car on. So from the sounds of it high pressure line = not to bad, low pressure return = rubber hose (at least temp). Sound about right?
urbex
Who needs power steering?!
94 olds vert
Who needs power steering?! These cars suck without power steering. I've driven one for a couple months without power steerig it sucks. Matt as far as replacing the PS line is was a pain to do. Since you have a manual it might be easier for you. Steve
I took a hacksaw blade & taped up one end & used it to cut the metal line off right at the nut on the rack. Then I could get my wrench in & get the leverage to get the nut off . still was a pain though.
GOT2B GM
Yeah you can cut the line off at the fitting on the rack as Steve mentioned, and use a box end of a wrench or a socket.
Psych0matt
this sounds like a royal pain... Although I think I'm determined to do it myself since so far I haven't taken it into a shop for anything. Just the BXX garage

Psych0matt
well id like to have it fixed before then. However, I'd also like to not have it in pieces when I'm supposed to drive it down there

Psych0matt
I believe it's this line that's leaking. Upon taking the wheel off and looking around (with what little room there was), it seemed that it was wet down further, where it's rubber hose and not solid line. I don't know where to go from here
GOT2B GM
I guarantee you it's leaking at the crimp connection where the rubber hose meets the steel line
Psych0matt
I guarantee you it's leaking at the crimp connection where the rubber hose meets the steel line that's kinda what I was thinking. Is that fixable, or do I have to replace the entire line?
GOT2B GM
I've always just changed the line and was done with it
Psych0matt
That's The high pressure line I take it?
94 olds vert
When I did mine I changed the entire line. I think the top line is return.
GOT2B GM
The return line is the one that has the regular hose clamp on it, the one that threads into the top of the pump is the high pressure line.

Psych0matt
Where does the other end of the line end up? Should I be looking on the drivers or passengers side? I ordered the line today but it'll be in tomorrow
