It has 106K on it. the car had bad motor but the tranny was said to be good. Not sure of how to check it but it's sitting in my garage. thikstik
Can I give you $100 to check the diff?!!
thatcutteeboy
This appears to be what's at fault on the Vert so I will try just replacing the case for now.
Crazy K
You'll need the differential too........ Something failed to break the case.... You will probably notice a missing spider gear. You could possibly get away with installing a new spider gear, but i would replace the differential to be safe. keep in mind that if you only put a case on without fixing the diff, the missing gear will cause the remaining gears to load unevenly and they will break soon, too. thikstik
X2 what Crazy said. So did you look at anything inside case yet? Car will not drive with a broken spider gear. A new diff is cheap, and its only a small task with hardest thing to do is to remove snap ring that retains diff. You can use a small pic and screwdriver. Hey I did have a balljoint come loose on that side earlier this year and the axle was pulled out. Could that have caused a crack that just got weaker. I still haven't physically looked at it myself but my friend said the crack is by where the speed sensor is bolted in. The car still moves under it's own power

thikstik
Just being sarcastic because Ive posted what to do over and over....you gotta pull that side case off, find out whats going on inside it and go from there. Only special tool needed is the big axle nut. good luck
thatcutteeboy
Finally got a chance to tear down the Vert to check the housing and sure enough one of the gears was what caused the housing to bust. Got everything out of the way and got stumped with this bracket that mounts to the housing itself. Took all the bolts that I could see out and something is still holding it. Heres a picture of the bracket that I am talking about. Can someone chime in here with any help Please?
White93z34
it may be helpful to take the dogbone out and pull the engine forward some to relieve pressure on it?

Heres a picture of the bracket that I am talking about. Can someone chime in here with any help Please? That bracket bolts to the rear lower motor mount and to the block behind the alternator. Time to drop the altnernator out, along with lift the engine up a little bit to get it off the rear motor mount. I have fought with this bracket when doing my 5spd swap and it caused me alot of grief. I could not find a way to get it off w/o the altnernator being removed and having the engine lifted to take the pressuer off. and even then it was a paid to wiggle off the motor mount itself. You might have to take the bolts off the bottom of the mount and completely take the rubber mount out.
thikstik
youre almost there...the next difficulty will be removing the thin but large snapring that holds the diff housing. A small pick or screwdriver does work.
