Engine is done for?

Hey guys,

After doing so much maintence to my 91 z34 (tires, belts, egr valve, idle air control, few other misc things). The engine started making this horrific noise (sounds like it's trying to make kettle corn, with two midgets fighting each other to the death in there aswell). It's SUPPOSE to be my daily driver from work and back... So... I have to know; what's the average price for an engine rebuild on the 3.4? I know it's going to be costly. I'm at about 99.5k miles on it.

It's currently just sitting in my driveway.

Thanks in advance..

Just grab a motor from the junkyard and swap them out.

I don't support this idea, with all due respect.

When we swapped my engine we made sure that we had a good running donor car, with a horrible body, and that was by design on my part.

It's one thing for some jerk to tell you that it is or what or whatever running properly, it's another thing to have a car that's wrecked or rusted in your driveway that's body's not willing, but internal organs can go on. This is also helpful for swapping some of the year-dependent junk as well. Just my two cents.

Right now your TOP PRIORITY is to get the car going. I kinda agree with the others, a SALVAGE yard unit(those motors are usually pulled) is your best bet. Get this car going ASAP.

now if it was a project car, definitely I would do a good rebuild from a machine shop that preferably builds racing motors.(they KNOW what they are doing)

once you get the salvage unit in then you can tinker around with this motor, it still might be fixable.(economically)

BTW I noticed you said the car has 99.5k? That is very low mileage!:)

Before you consider the engine a total loss, did you thourghly check it out? You sure it's not a bearing in an accessory that went bad and is making tons of noise? Did you run a compression test to see if you still have compression at all cylinders? Did you verify the timing of the cams to make sure the timing belt didn't jump a tooth? Sorry I'm not too sure what two midgets fighting and eating kettle corn is like when imagining a motor making noise lol. Any unusual color smoke out the exhaust?

Let's say it's a cracked cylinder head, that is easier, quicker and cheaper than a motor swap.

I agree about checking it out first. Theres something that changed rapidly after the tune up. I dont see why external items wouldve caused internal damage. What about plug wires out of order? Maybe something got inside valve cover thru oil hole? Maybe its valve train related. Is engine a gummer? That thing should be good for another 100-150k miles its had some maintenance.
