19Cutlass94 Posted September 4, 2011 Report Posted September 4, 2011 Hey guys, heres a quick question on headers... we all know that N/A cars want equal length primaries for headers. But as a guess ( since I doubt anyone has dyno'ed this ) how much power is to be lost between equal length primaries and non equal length? Either way I know they are better than manifolds.. Quote
white4d96 Posted September 4, 2011 Report Posted September 4, 2011 Actually IIRC turbo cars are the ones that want equal primaries. Quote
Andrew Posted September 5, 2011 Report Posted September 5, 2011 you only lose a few ponies on the top end. Find a sweet deal somewhere? Quote
Schurkey Posted September 5, 2011 Report Posted September 5, 2011 Depends on how "optimized" the "equal-length" headers are. If the headers are equal length, but WAY TOO LONG or WAY TOO SHORT, or WAY TOO LARGE DIAMETER, I'd rather have the non-equal length units if they're reasonably close to correct. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted September 5, 2011 Author Report Posted September 5, 2011 Well all the headers are 1 5/8" primaries. But they would be about 15" in length, as compared to the non equal length headers Quote
white4d96 Posted September 5, 2011 Report Posted September 5, 2011 I would go unequal honestly. Easier packaging, and from what I've gathered, not as peaky. Quote
Oilpatch197 Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 What brands are you considering? Hookers, Headman's? Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted September 10, 2011 Author Report Posted September 10, 2011 So far Ive only found 2 places that make quality headers... Quote
white4d96 Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 What car is this for even? Quote
rjOlds Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 If this is for an LQ1 motor, I have read that there is little improvement to be made by replacing the stock setup with anything aftermarket. I cannot say for sure if this is true or not, but unless you are absolutely set on equal length, from what I have seen on mine, the stock setup seems pretty good already. The best mod I have heard so far was to heat wrap them to reduce the under hood temps which I wish I would have thought of when I had the motor rebuilt this past spring. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted September 11, 2011 Author Report Posted September 11, 2011 What car is this for even? For mine. Headers are already being made for LQ1 W-body cars. But the 3100/3400 W-body cars is different. Only two places I found are WOT-Tech and Milzy. Both are expensive, and you need to use Milzy's DP with the headers., which makes Milzy's almost twice the price.. S&S arent made anymore, even though they do pop-up on ebay and such from time to time... Pacestter are just absolute JUNK. Quote
white4d96 Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 Can you weld? You could make some logs for pretty cheap... Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted September 11, 2011 Author Report Posted September 11, 2011 Headers or bust... Quote
BXX Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Make your own. Save some cash, and have constant perma-grin everytime you look at them or someone says they are awsome. Quote

The 4-figure milzy's are the only ones I know of. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted September 12, 2011 Author Report Posted September 12, 2011 Milzy is the only one I know of that makes LQ1 headers. And at $999 I doubt very much he sells alot of em. Quote

Oh, I thought your post said both did. I would love headers, but 1k+ is a bit steep and when they came out a few years ago the design wasn't well received..... Quote
white4d96 Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Honestly I don't see you making enough power NA to justify having headers. Not to mention the packaging nightmare you would have trying to put six pipes together where two normally go. Adam made a front log and ported his factory rear IIRC. If I was staying NA I would do that. If/When I pick up my project to take my TGP parts I will be making logs front and rear. Quote

The milzy's fit in there ok and they're worth horsepower even on a stock LQ1. Hell I've heard even a better downpipe on stock manifolds is worth power because its all so restrictive. Quote
BXX Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Hell, for $1000, you could damn near turbo a car if you have access to a welder and some time to kill. Quote

Not sure how you would upgrade them. Quote

BXX Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Well what it's worth is always in the eyes of the beholder and also depends on how deep their pockets are. I've priced out what all I will need to make my own headers, and it comes out to be aboot $300-$400. Quote
