I had a hole in an otherwise good cv . I bought Dorman universal boot. It seemed marginal (china crap) but like it would work. Anyway, the clamps are impossible to tension and lock. The instructions show a clamping tool, yet the box says its a simple 20 minute repair. I just bought a new shaft. Anyone know of a boot kit with workable clamps? thanks

I've used a ton of them with good success. I usually just ask the parts counter guy what I need, I get it, install and reinstall.

there are 2 different kind of clamps both of which need their own special tool to use. one isa crimp on style similar to OE the other is some weird looking band clamps that need curled over with a special tool, both of which are avaliable at the autoparts store.

I got some type of clamp where you flip it over itself, and there's a locking tab you bend over it to lock it in place. No special tools needed. No idea what it's called, but the guy at AutoZone suggested it, and it worked fine. (Well, it's still on the car at least! )

I looked on rockauto at one made by Raybestos and it looked like the clamp had a more freindly design. I wonder if a zip tye woudve worked.

Every time I see a boot with a plastic strap (zip tie, tyrap) the first clue is all the grease on the outside...

The generic plastic straps don't hold nearly tight enough.

Advance took it back. Thats reasonable , as the package stated that it was easily installed in 20 minutes. I was doubtful about using wire tyes.

safety wires! I've seen wire wrapped around the boot, and the ends twisted together...

I hate the band clamp style that seem to come with most boots now. Napa carries a "universal" version of the OE style crimp on clamp, and that's what I used on my car. Works well!

Its all in the proper tool. I prefer the crimp clamps personally but with the right tool its not hard to make the band style seal right.
