19Cutlass94
Hey guys, for the past two days Ive been trying to figure out whats been going on with the car. The starter clicks and thats it. As soon as you turn the key to start, I only have ~5v to the starter. Ive checked the ignition switch, ohm tested it, turned out good. Tested the neutral safety switch and it ohm tested ok. Ive been checking resistance in the whole circuit, and I cannot find where the voltage is dropping. The starter is brand new, and if jumped, it turns the motor over. Sometimes by turning the key to start several times in a row, it might catch and start, but thats rare. I checked the theift deterant system, and thats fine. Any ideas guys? Im out of em, and really really need help as the car has been down for over a week now.
ron350
So far so good now check the same test points with a test light? The teat light will put a load on the circuit and hopefully show where the voltage is dropping. Good luck.
19Cutlass94
I think I might have found the issue, but not sure yet. Have to wait till next weekend now.
AL
What do you think it is?
19Cutlass94
Well I ohm tested the fuseable links, and one has .4ohm goign to the alt and the other was 2-3ohms going to the fuseblock. But I also need to find out why Im killing alternators. This one that Ill be putting in is like the 3 in a few months. Maybe they just dont like 6Krpm?! thikstik
I wouldnt worry about that small amount of resistance. So you have 5 volts at the solenoid trigger wire, correct? Try disconnecting the wire and measuring then (ign swithc ON). If its 12v then, it is solenoid Id think. OR, may be loose brushes in starter...thats what my 235k mile starter had. $0.00 to fix! And Ive seen it on a few other W bodies.
Blitzkreig75
I have this exact issue with my 94 Supreme. Has done this for several years. Three different starters and two batteries later no change. Removed the alarm, VATS has been disabled, (the resistor thingy), even replaced main hot/grounds between the battery, it's ground, and between the battery and starter. You say yours "... might catch and start, but that's rare". Mine does this exact behavior with supreme, (yes, pun if you will), inconsistency. May do it for a week, (two clicks and start), or may not do it for a month, then on and off in another week, only to not do it again for weeks on end. If someone knows this cause please enlighten us!!! EDIT: I, too, have replaced the alternator twice in three years. Mind you, I only drive about 3k miles a year. GaPrix
I think i'm having the same issue. Everyday, it clicks once, turn key...click....turn key...click...etc...then it'll start. It might take 7 tries. I've replaced the starter/solenoid a couple of times, had them tested by multiples shops, had the alt and battery tested several times, even when I changed battery this still went on. Mel87
Maybe a hot battery?
